MarkTwain(pseudonym〈笔名〉ofSamuelLanghorneClemens),wasanAmericanwriter,journalistandhumorist,whowonaworldwideaudienceforhisstoriesofTheAdventuresofTomSawyerandTheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn.
ClemenswasbornonNovember30,1835inFlorida,Missouri,ofaVirginianfamily.HewasbroughtupinHannibal,Missouri.Afterhisfather'sdeathin1847,hewasapprenticed(当学徒)toaprinterandwroteforhisbrother'snewspaper.HelaterworkedasaIicensed(得到许可的)Mississippiriverboatpilot.TheCivilWarputanendtothesteamboattrafficandClemensmovedtoVirginiaCity,whereheeditedtheTerritorialEnterprise.OnFebruary3,1863,“MarkTwain”wasbornwhenClemenssignedahumoroustravelaccountwiththatpseudonym.
In1864TwainleftforCalifornia,andworkedinSanFranciscoasareporter.HevisitedHawaiiasacorrespondent(通讯员)forTheSacramentoUnion,publishinglettersonhistripandgivinglectures.Hesetoutonaworldtour,travelinginFranceandItaly.Hisexperienceswererecordedin1869inTheInnocentsAbroad,whichgainedhimwidepopularity.
Between1876and1884hepublishedseveralmasterpieces.Duringhislongwritingcareer,Twainalsoproducedaconsiderablenumberofessays.TwaindiedonApril21,1910.
