Ihavealwayshadaninterestinscience-basedsubjects,especiallythoserelatingtobiology.WhilstundertakingmyA-levelBiologycourse,themoduleenergyandecosystemswasofparticularinteresttome.Myinterestinthenaturalworld,andstudyofscienceencouragedmetofurthermyunderstandinginthisareabyapplyingtostudyenvironmentalbiologyatdegreelevel.Iwishtotakethiscoursetoenablemetodevelopscientificskillsthatwillprovidemewithagreaterunderstandingoftheenvironmentandfactorsthataffectit.IamalsostudyingChemistryandMathsatA-level.Thepracticalelementofmychemistrycourseinvolvesanunderstandingofproceduresandprecautionsnecessarythroughoutallscience-basedexperiments;Ifeelthatthisunderstandingwillimprovemyabilityinpracticalelementsofthecourse.AfterstudyingA-levelmaths,Ifeelbeingabletointerpretnumericaldataatahighlevelwillalsoenablemetodevelopmyunderstandingofanynumericalinformationthatfeaturesinthecourse

Iamkeenonsportsandoutdoorpursuits.Ihaveenjoyedarangeofactivitiesfromcountrysidewalkstokayakingandabseiling.BecauseofthisIfeelIwouldparticularlyenjoythefieldworkthecourseoffers.Ihavebeenabletocombinethisinterestinsportwithaparttimejobasaleisureattendantatlocalsportcentres.AspartofthispostIwasaskedtoleadayouthsportsandactivitiesgroupwhichaimstopromotesportamongyoungpeopleinmyarea.ThisactivityhasalsoallowedmetointroduceotheryoungpeopletoactivitiesthatIhaveenjoyed.ThisrolehasalsohelpedmetodevelopskillsthatwouldhelpmewhileIamatuniversity.Thesportsgroupinvolvesarrangingindividualsessionsaswellastripsout

Thishasimprovedmyorganisationalskills,whichhasreflectedmyabilitytocombinepart-timeworkwithcollegeeffectively.Workingaspartofateamandservingmembersofthepublichasalsoimprovedmysocialskills,makingmemoreconfidentwhenworkingwithothers

Iwishtostudyatuniversity,notonlyfortheknowledgethatIwillgainfromthecourse,butalsofortheexperienceofuniversitylifehastooffer.DuringmytwoyearsatcollegeIhaveparticipatedinvariousactivities.Forexample,Irepresentedthecollegeatanopenday,volunteeredasacollagecouncilrepresentativeformyformgroup,participatedinablooddonationschemeandwasalsoinvolvedintheshoeboxappeal.TheseactivitiesmeantthatIhavetobeconfident,approachableandpolite.Ifeelthesearecharacteristicsthatwillenablemetogetinvolvedwithstudentlifeatuniversity

Myambitionistoparticipateinconservationworkabroad,beforegainingexperienceinacareerbasedinthisarea.IfeeltheexperienceoutlinedaboveandtheknowledgeIwillgainfromthecoursewillenablemetoachievethisambition.

IamespeciallykeentostudyBiologyandPsychology.Forme,themainappealofthecourseliesinthevarietyoftopicsthatwillbecovered.TheaspectsofBiologyIfindparticularlyinterestingareneuroscienceandhowtheimmunesystemfunctionsandresponds.InPsychology,Iamveryinterestedinwhatmakespeopleuniqueandhowdifferentfactorsshapeourpersonality

AtpresentIamemployedatMcDonald'swherewithinoneyearofworkIgotpromotedtoaFloorManager.ThenIrapidlygotpromotedasashiftManager.Beingatthispositionitgivesmenumerousofresponsibilities.ForinstanceIamresponsibleforthewholeresturant,ensuringthegoodcommunicationflowexistsbetweenthecrewmembers,correctproceduresarefollowed,restaurantgoalsareachievedandensuringthateverycustomergets100%customersatisfaction

"Scientistsinvestigatethatwhichalreadyis.Technologistscreatethatwhichhasneverbeen."IchoseengineeringasalifepursuitbecauseIwishtoengageinboth.ThischoicewasenhancedbyapersonalyearningtoapplyallthatIlearn;Iwantedtobeabletoimplementmyphysicalandmathematicalabilitiesinreallifesituations.Ifeelhighereducationwouldenablemetorealisethisaim.

Althoughallaspectsofphysicsandengineeringintrigueme,Iamparticularlyinterestedinthemedicalapplicationofthesetwodisciplines.WhenconsideringwhichfieldImightenterIrealisedthattheonlydisciplinethatappealedtome,otherthanengineering,wasmedicine.HavingresearchedthecrossoverbetweenmedicineandengineeringIdecidedthatbioengineeringprovidedtheperfectblend.

InordertoimprovemygraspofA-levelPhysicsandMathematics,anddevelopabetterunderstandingoftheoptionsavailabletomeinHigherEducation,IhavemadeextensiveuseoftheonlinelecturesoftheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology（MIT）.IwasparticularlyreceptivetotheteachingmethodsofthePhysicslecturer,ProfessorLewin.

SupplementaryreadinghaswidenedmyhorizonsandencouragedmetoexamineelementsaboveandbeyondtheA-levelcourse.SomeofthebooksIhaveencounteredinclude'ABriefHistoryofTime'byStephenHawkingandalso'Mr.TompkinsinWonderland'byNobelPrizewinner,GeorgeGamow.Thelatterwasmorethansimply'aphysicsbook'tome-thepresentationofthephysicalprincipalswithinalovestoryprovedtobeextremelycaptivating.Followingthedebateregardingstudents'decliningabilitiesandthe'dumbingdown'oftheA-levelsIhaveundertakenastudyofmaterialfromtheolder,andinmyopinionmorechallenging,1996syllabus.Bookssuchas'EssentialPrinciplesofPhysics'byWhelanandHodgsonhavebeenparticularlyenlighteninginthisrespect.

IfeelthattheoreticalconceptsareeasiertounderstandandmoreeasilyabsorbedwhentheyaretangibleandthereforeIhaveappliedtotheYearinIndustryscheme,hopingthatthiswillenhancetheapplicationofmymathematicalandphysicalskills.DuetopersonalissuesduringtheA-levelexamperiodIwasunabletoachievemypotentialanddidnotmeetallmypredictedgrades.InordertoamendthisIhavechosentoretakesomemodulesduringmygapyearwhilstatthesametimestudyinganewsubjectandexpandingmylanguageskills.

Iconsiderthatmymulticulturalupbringing,including12yearsinJapan,DubaiandtheSudanhaveledtomebeingawell-roundedandcolourfulperson.AsaconsequenceofthistimeIbenefitedbygainingknowledgeaboutdifferenttraditions,aninsightintodiversecultures,andafurtheranceinmylinguisticabilities.Thisgrantedmetheabilitytoadapttodifferentenvironmentsswiftlyandcomfortably,whichwouldexplainmyenthusiasmformeetingnewpeople.Moreover,thecontrastinthelivingstandardsinthesedifferentenvironmentshasshownmetheimportanceofscienceandtechnologyinourlives.

Professionalshaveconfirmedformethatbioengineeringisanintellectuallychallengingfield,requiringcommitmentandmotivation.IhavealwaysbelievedinfullydevotingmyselftoallthatIdo,andwithmyparticularinterestsandexperiences,Ifeelthatonlyanopportunitytostudybioengineeringatuniversitywillenablemetoexpressmyabilitiesintheirentirety.
