Earlierinherlife,however,Marthadidnotknowthatshewouldbecomeadancer.Atthattime,thedancerswerelookeddownon.SoMartha'sparentsdidn'tapproveofherdesiretodanceatthebeginning.Until1916,shebeganherstudiesatthenewlycreatedDenishawnSchoolofDancingandRelatedArts,foundedbyRuthSt.DenisandTedShawn,whereGrahamworkedveryhardtoimproveherabilitytodancebecauseshewasconsideredtoooldtobegindancing.

In1936,GrahammadeherdefiningworkChronicle,whichsignaledthebeginningofanewerainmoderndance.Thedancebroughtseriousissuestothestageforthegeneralpublicinadramaticmanner.InfluencedbytheWallStreetCrashof1929,theGreatDepressionthatfollowed,andtheSpanishCivilWar,itfocusedondepressionandisolation,reflectedinthedarknatureofboththesetandcostumes.

Grahamcontinuedtodancepasttheageofseventy.Onceagain,shewasmetwithcriticismfrompeoplewhocametowatchhershows.Butshedidn'tgiveup.Herlastcompletedballetwas1990'sMapleLeafRag."ADancer'sWorld"isanintroductiontoGrahamandherwork.Shetellsaboutherdancesandherdancegroupshowssomeoftheirmethods.

MarthaGrahamreceivedmanyawardsduringherlifetime,includingthePresidentialMedalofFreedomin1976.Shewasthefirstdancertoreceivethecountry'shighestcivilianhonor.Shediedin1991attheageofninety-six.In1998,Timemagazinelistedherasthe"DanceroftheCentury"bandasoneofthemostimportantpeopleofthetwentiethcentury.

Thescientists,fromRockefellerUniversityinNewYork,US,foundthatdelayedsleepphasedisorder(DSPD),aconditionthataffectsone’ssleepingpatterns,ispasseddownviaamutated(突变的)gene.DSPDsuffererswakeuplaterandgotobedlaterthantheaverageperson.

Tocometotheirconclusion,theteamstudieda46-year-oldwomanwhoisonlyusuallyabletofallasleepat2or3inthemorning.

Itwasdiscoveredthatthewoman’sbodyproducesthehormonethathelpsussleepatnightuptosevenhourslaterthanregularsleepers.Thescientistsfoundthiswascausedbyamutationinoneofthewoman’sgene,onethathelpsregulatethe“bodyclock”.

Someofthewoman’sfamilymemberswerealsofoundtosharethesamemutation----andthesamesleepingproblems----leadingthescientiststobelievethatsleeptroublesarepasseddownthroughthegenerations.

However,havingthismutationdoesn’tmeanyouautomaticallyhavesleepproblems.Theteamalsofoundtwopeoplewhohadthemutationbutreportednoproblemswiththeirsleep.

Butwhilethisisallinterestingdiscovery,itoffersnohelptothosewhocan’tfallasleepatnight----althoughthereareafewthingsyoucouldtrytohelpyousleepearlier.
