1.CourseIntroduction

PrecededbythecoursesofConversationandCommunication,PublicSpeakingandPresentation,thiscourseindebateandnegotiation,asarequiredcoursefortheEnglishmajorsintegratesmulti-levellanguageskills.Itaimsatimprovingstudents’competenceinlogicalthinkingandoralexpression,enablingstudentstounderstandtheprocedureandrulesofparliamentdebateandbusinessnegotiationaswellasfacilitatingstudentswiththebasicskillsofdebateandnegotiation.Theultimatepurposeofthiscourseistoenhancestudents’comprehensivelanguageproficiency,toobtaintheknow-howofargumentationandanalysisandtoutilizethetheoreticalknowledgeinpractice.Studentsaresupposedtofullyparticipateinallthedesignedclassroomactivitiesandfinishthetasksafterclassintheformofindividual,pairworkorgroupwork.

3．Teachingobjectivesandrequirements

Thiscourseaimsatcultivatingstudents’abilitytocommunicateontopicsrelativetosociallifeandtoexpresstheircriticalthoughtsinacoherentandlogicalway.Itlaysemphasisontheintegrationoftheoreticallecturesandthepracticaldrillssoastolevelupstudents’languagemastery.Onthebasisofthiscourse,studentsaresupposedtomakea7-8minute’sstatementwithcoherenceonagiventopicafterashortperiodofpreparationandtograspthebasicskillsofbusinessnegotiationbyanaccurateandproperexpressionofpersonalideas.Thedevelopmentofdoingreachesonsocialissuessuchasdailylife,politics,economy,culturalandforeignaffairsinanindependentwayisarequirementofstudentswhotakethiscourse.

4．Relevancetoothercoursesandrequirements

Thiscourseisatanadvancedlevelcomparedtotheothercoursesconcerningtheenhancementofstudents’oralexpressioninEnglish.AftertakingthecoursesConversationandCommunicationandPublicSpeakingandPresentationSkills,students’competenceinlistening,speaking,readingandwritingisqualifiedforthiscourseandtheirknowledgeinculturalissuesisalsosupportive.ThiscourseisaconsolidationoftheothercoursesrelatingtooralEnglishandacompletionofaseriesoforalEnglishcourses.

5．TeachingMethods

Thiscourseintegratestheoriesbylecturesondebateandnegotiationwiththepracticaldrills.Studentswillwatchabundantvisualmaterialsofdebatesandreadagoodmanynegotiationcases.TheywillattendthemodelBPparliamentdebatesandsomebusinessnegotiationsinclass.Studentswillworkinpairsorteamstocooperatewithothersandtofinishtheevaluationbythemselvesortoeachother.

6.CoursePolicies

1）In-classparticipation:

Students’involvementinpracticalexercisesrunsthrougheverylecturewhichrequiresstudentstofullytakepartintheTeacher-Studentinteractionandtheplannedtasksforthemselves.

2）Off-classconsolidation:

Studentsoughttofinishtheassignments（individual,pairorgiventeamwork）bytheteacherinordertointensifyandconsolidatewhattheylearninclass.

3）Theattendanceandassessment:

AnFor60-isgiventothosestudentswhodon’tattendclasstwicewithoutawrittenrequestforleaveorthosewhousetheircellphonesinclassmorethanthreetimes.Absenceswithawrittenrequestforleaveahead（inasuddenandunexpectedsituation,therequestforabsenceispermittedafterwards）areauthorizedtwice.Fromthethirdtimeonwards,studentswillgetadeductionof5pointsinthetotalevaluation.

Theoverallassessmentofthiscourseincludesformativeandsummativeassessmentbytheteacher,self-assessmentandpeerassessment.Formativeassessmenttakes40%,summativetakes50%,studentself-evaluationandpeerevaluationtakes10%ofthetotalgrade.

--Formativeassessmenttasks：

1）In-classpractice:

ThreetasksincludetwoPDPracticesandoneNegotiationdrilling.Eachofthetasksholds30%oftheformativeassessment.

2）Off-classreflection:

Studentsaresupposedtosubmittheirwrittenpassageasareflectivefeedbacktothesethreetasks.Itaccountsfor10%oftheassessment.

--Summativeassessmenttasks：

a.Mid-termexams：

aModelParliamentDebateincludingallmajorroles--30%oftheassessment；

b.Finalexam:

eitheraModelPDoraBusinessnegotiationpracticeonatopicchosenbystudentsrandomlyfromthegiventopics（groupmembersarechosenrandomlyaswell）—70%oftheassessment

--Peerevaluationtasks：

Thestudentwillevaluateandanalyzetheperformanceofhis/hergroupmembers.Thescoresofpeerevaluationfromthegroupmemberswillbeaveragedout.Theaveragescoretakes10%ofthefinalgrade.
