1.CourseIntroduction

PrecededbythecoursesofConversationandCommunication,PublicSpeakingandPresentation,thiscourseindebateandnegotiation,asarequiredcoursefortheEnglishmajorsintegratesmulti-levellanguageskills.Itaimsatimprovingstudents’competenceinlogicalthinkingandoralexpression,enablingstudentstounderstandtheprocedureandrulesofparliamentdebateandbusinessnegotiationaswellasfacilitatingstudentswiththebasicskillsofdebateandnegotiation.Theultimatepurposeofthiscourseistoenhancestudents’comprehensivelanguageproficiency,toobtaintheknow-howofargumentationandanalysisandtoutilizethetheoreticalknowledgeinpractice.Studentsaresupposedtofullyparticipateinallthedesignedclassroomactivitiesandfinishthetasksafterclassintheformofindividual,pairworkorgroupwork.

3.Teachingobjectivesandrequirements

Thiscourseaimsatcultivatingstudents’abilitytocommunicateontopicsrelativetosociallifeandtoexpresstheircriticalthoughtsinacoherentandlogicalway.Itlaysemphasisontheintegrationoftheoreticallecturesandthepracticaldrillssoastolevelupstudents’languagemastery.Onthebasisofthiscourse,studentsaresupposedtomakea7-8minute’sstatementwithcoherenceonagiventopicafterashortperiodofpreparationandtograspthebasicskillsofbusinessnegotiationbyanaccurateandproperexpressionofpersonalideas.Thedevelopmentofdoingreachesonsocialissuessuchasdailylife,politics,economy,culturalandforeignaffairsinanindependentwayisarequirementofstudentswhotakethiscourse.

4.Relevancetoothercoursesandrequirements

Thiscourseisatanadvancedlevelcomparedtotheothercoursesconcerningtheenhancementofstudents’oralexpressioninEnglish.AftertakingthecoursesConversationandCommunicationandPublicSpeakingandPresentationSkills,students’competenceinlistening,speaking,readingandwritingisqualifiedforthiscourseandtheirknowledgeinculturalissuesisalsosupportive.ThiscourseisaconsolidationoftheothercoursesrelatingtooralEnglishandacompletionofaseriesoforalEnglishcourses.

5.TeachingMethods

Thiscourseintegratestheoriesbylecturesondebateandnegotiationwiththepracticaldrills.Studentswillwatchabundantvisualmaterialsofdebatesandreadagoodmanynegotiationcases.TheywillattendthemodelBPparliamentdebatesandsomebusinessnegotiationsinclass.Studentswillworkinpairsorteamstocooperatewithothersandtofinishtheevaluationbythemselvesortoeachother.

6.CoursePolicies

1)In-classparticipation:

Students’involvementinpracticalexercisesrunsthrougheverylecturewhichrequiresstudentstofullytakepartintheTeacher-Studentinteractionandtheplannedtasksforthemselves.

2)Off-classconsolidation:

Studentsoughttofinishtheassignments(individual,pairorgiventeamwork)bytheteacherinordertointensifyandconsolidatewhattheylearninclass.

3)Theattendanceandassessment:

AnFor60-isgiventothosestudentswhodon’tattendclasstwicewithoutawrittenrequestforleaveorthosewhousetheircellphonesinclassmorethanthreetimes.Absenceswithawrittenrequestforleaveahead(inasuddenandunexpectedsituation,therequestforabsenceispermittedafterwards)areauthorizedtwice.Fromthethirdtimeonwards,studentswillgetadeductionof5pointsinthetotalevaluation.

Theoverallassessmentofthiscourseincludesformativeandsummativeassessmentbytheteacher,self-assessmentandpeerassessment.Formativeassessmenttakes40%,summativetakes50%,studentself-evaluationandpeerevaluationtakes10%ofthetotalgrade.

--Formativeassessmenttasks:

1)In-classpractice:

ThreetasksincludetwoPDPracticesandoneNegotiationdrilling.Eachofthetasksholds30%oftheformativeassessment.

2)Off-classreflection:

Studentsaresupposedtosubmittheirwrittenpassageasareflectivefeedbacktothesethreetasks.Itaccountsfor10%oftheassessment.

--Summativeassessmenttasks:

a.Mid-termexams:

aModelParliamentDebateincludingallmajorroles--30%oftheassessment;

b.Finalexam:

eitheraModelPDoraBusinessnegotiationpracticeonatopicchosenbystudentsrandomlyfromthegiventopics(groupmembersarechosenrandomlyaswell)—70%oftheassessment

--Peerevaluationtasks:

Thestudentwillevaluateandanalyzetheperformanceofhis/hergroupmembers.Thescoresofpeerevaluationfromthegroupmemberswillbeaveragedout.Theaveragescoretakes10%ofthefinalgrade.
