Foreample,inSinglish,youcaneasilyrecognieinfluencesfromChinese,includingvocabularysuchas”MeeSiam”and“dabao”.Sentencestructureslie”toiletwhere”insteadof“where’sthetoilet”alsocomefromChinese.
Interestinganddiverseasitmayseem,thetrendforSinglishisworryingSingapore’sgovernment.Itisconcernedthatthedialectisloweringthecountry’sEnglishstandardandmayaffectitsrelationshipwithvisitors.ItevenstartedtheSpeaGoodEnglishMovement.

Lastyearthetechindustrygotabadname-BigTech-withunfortunateechoesofotherindustriesthathavefacedfierceopposition,includingBigTobacco.Liethem,thetechindustryhastoreduceconcernfromanewgenerationofactivistshareholders(股东)thatarequestioningitsroleintheworld.ThesecampaignsareneverasfierceasthosefacedbyBigTobacco.Inthe1990s,sociallyresponsibleinvestorsrefusedtoputmoneyintobaccostocs.
