Butthebattleforthewetlandsisastruggle.Whileeffortstostoplossesarecontinuing,wetlandsaroundtheworldarestillbeingfilledinandcoveredup.Overthepastthreecenturies,almost90%oftheworld’swetlandshavedisappeared.Thelossratehasincreasedsincethe1970s,withwetlandsnowdisappearingthreetimesfasterthan,theworld’sforests.

Some5,000wetland-dependentanimalspeciescoulddieoutbecauseofsuchlosses.Wetlandlosscanalsoaffecthumanbeings.Wetlandsactasnaturalstorageareasforwater.Losingthoseareascouldleadtomoreseverefloodinginmanypartsoftheworld.Andtheactofremovingwaterfromwetlandscanreleasehugeamountsofcarbondioxide,amajorcontributortoclimatechange.
