Nowchiefexecutivesofabouttwodozencompanieshavedecidedtoplungeheadfirstintothispoliticallyunsettleddebate.Togetherwith36universitiesand7non-profitableorganizations,formedaforumthatsetforthanactionplanessennallydesignedtohelpcollegescircumventcourt-imposedrestrictionsonaffirmativeaction.TheCEOs'motive:

"Ouraudienceisgrowingmorediverse,sothecommunitiesweservebenefitifouremployeesareraciallyandethnicallydiverse"aswell,saysoneCEOofacompanythatownsninetelevisionstations.

Amongthestepstheforumispushing:

findingcreativeyetlegalwaystoboostminorityenrollmentthroughnewadmissionspolicies;promotingadmissionsdecisionsthatlookatmorethantestscore;andencouraginguniversitiestostepuptheirminorityoutreachandfinancialaid.Andtocounteraccusationsbycritiestochallengethesetacticsincourt,thegroupsaysitwillgivelegalassistancetocollegessuedfortryingthem."Diversitydiminishedbythecourtmustbemadeupforinotherlegitimate,legalways,"saysaforummember.
