TheythenheadedsouthtoBrisbanebutthecitywasexperiencingmassiveflooding,sotheycrossedthecountrytoPerthwheretheynarrowlyescapedragingbushfires.ThecouplethenflewtoChristchurch,NewZealand,arrivingjustafteramassivemagnitude6.3earthquakedestroyedthecityonFebruary22.
Mrs.Svanstromsaid,“Whenwegottherethewholetownwasawarzone.”
