Beforethe1500’s,thewesternplainsofNorthAmericaweredominatedbyfarmers.Onegroup,theMandans,livedintheupperMissouriRivercountry,primarilyinpresent-dayNorthDakota.Theyhadlargevillagesofhousesbuiltclosetogether.ThetightarrangementenabledtheMandanstoprotectthemselvesmoreeasilyfromtheattacksofotherswhomightseektoobtainsomeoffoodthesehighlycapablefarmersstoredfromoneyeartothenext.
