Unit3ThePresent

I.Backgroundinformation

1.TraditionalBirthdayCelebrationinWesternCountries

IntheWest,itiscustomarytoholdapartyincelebrationofaperson’sbirthday.Theguestswillcometothepartywithbirthdaypresentsandsay“HappyBirthday”tothebirthdayperson.Thegueststhenwatchhimorheropenthepresentsandheorshethanksthemforthepresentstheyhavebrought.Atthepartydrinksandfoodareserved.Towardtheendofthedinnerthelightsintheroomareturnedoff,andsomeonecomesinfromanotherroomwithacakeonwhicharelightedcandles,oneforeachyear.Atthesightofthecaketheguestsbeginsinging“HappyBirthdaytoYou”andthebirthdaypersonmakesawishbeforeheorsheblowsoutthecandlesonthecake.Itissaidthatthewishwillcometrueifallthecandlesgooutinonepuff.Afterthat,thecakeiscutinslicesusuallybythebirthdayperson,onepieceforeachguest.Whenthepartycomestoanend,theguestswishthebirthdayperson“HappyBirthday”againandleave.
