Thebirthofsnookercomesfromthe19thcenturywhenBritishArmyofficersstationedinIndia.Theseofficersoftenplayedbilliardsbutthegameonlyhadtwoplayers.Inordertoplaywithmanyplayers,moreballswereintroducedtothematchandmoreplayersbegantoplayineachgame.ThenewgamesthatformedwerecalledBlackPoolandLifePool.Theyfinallycombinedinthelate19thcenturytocreatethegameofsnooker.ItwasnamedbyaBritishArmyofficerSirNevilleChamberlain,with“Snooker”thenbeinganotherexpressionforafirstyeararmystudents.SirNevilleChamberlainoncesaidthatoneoftheplayerswasa“realsnooker”andeversincethenamehasbeencalled.

Thenewsportdidn’tbecomepopularuntil1916andthefirstworldchampionshipin1927waswonbyJoeDavis.Afterthat,snookercontinuedtoincreaseinpopularity(流行)throughouttheUKandtheworldsnookerchampionshipwasheldonceayear.Daviscontinuedtoleadtheprofessionalgamebywinningeveryworldchampionshipupuntilhisretirementin1946afterhewontheworldchampionship.
