BullyingandChildren
Whatyoursonisdescribingisbullying,plainandsimple.Althoughitislateintheschoolyear,youshouldtakeactionbyreassuringyoursonthathedidnothingtobringthisonandthatyouwillhelphim.Manyparents,unfortunately,thinkthatbullyingandbeingbulliedareritesofpassage,somethingallkidsendureatsomepointintheirlivesjustlikesufferingthroughboringassembliesandbadcafeteriafood.Butbullyingisnot,andshouldnotbe,consideredanormalpartofgrowingup.
StudiesdoneinNorwayshowthatbullyingismostcommonintheyoungeragegroupsbutisstillpresenteveninthemid-teens.Thepercentofchildrenwhoarebulliedrangesfrom17%inthesecondgradetoabout5%intheninthgrade.ArecentsurveyintheUnitedStatesshowsthat10%ofchildrenreportedbeingbullied,13%reportedbeingabully,and6%reportedbeingbothbulliedandbeingthebully.Thissurveywaslimitedtosixththroughtenthgraders.
Whatisbullying?
Bullyinginvolvesintentionalandrepeatedactionsandwordsdesignedtointimidateorhurtanotherperson.Thereisusuallyanimbalanceofpower,eitherphysicalorpsychological,betweentheperpetratorandhisorhervictim.Occasionalnamecallingandshovingarenotconsideredbullyingtauntsandnamecallingbyanypersonsregularly,thenthatisconsideredbullying.Physicalaggression,socialalienation,verbalaggression,andintimidationarethefourmaincategoriesofbullying.
Manyparentsareshockedwhentheyfindouttheirchildhasbeenthevictimofabully,andafewparentsareshockedtofindoutthattheirchildhasbeenabully.Victimstendtobemorepassive,anxious,andinsecurethannon-victimsandtohavemorenegativeviewsofthemselves.Asmallpercentageofvictimsaretermed“provocative”becausetheyarebothanxiousandaggressive,oftenseekingtheattentionoftheperpetrator.
Thebullies,bycomparison,tendtobeaggressivechildrenandfrequentlylacksympathyforothers.Bulliesusuallyhaveapositiveself-imageandadesiretobeincontrol.Thebullycherishespower.Thecherishedmythofthebullyasalonerwithapoorself-imageseekingtobolsterhisownself-worthbyattackingothersdidn’tholduptoscrutinyofscientificstudy.Ofcourse,therewillalwaysbevictimsandperpetratorswhodonotfittheseprofiles!
Anychildcanbeabully,andanychildcanbebulliedifthecircumstancesareright.
Althoughbullyingiscommon,studiesreportthatonlyhalfthechildrenreportwhatishappeningtoaparent,andevenfewertoateacher.Fewadultswitnesstheactsofthebullybecausemostaggressionoccursatschoolandplaceswherethereislittleoversightbyanadult.Theplayground,cafeteria,andtestroomsarecommonlocationsfortheperpetratortoact.
Childrenwhoarevictimsmaydevelopavarietyofvaguehealthcomplaintstoavoidgoingtoschoolorwhereverthebullyingistakingplace.Sometimesthiskindofschoolavoidancebehaviorcanbearedflagforparents,soaskyourchildifheorsheisbeingpickedonandbullied.
Whattodoaboutbullying
Ifyourchildrevealstoyouthatheorsheisbeingbullied,takeaction.Parentscanhelpthechildbyteachinghimhowtodemonstrateanairofself-confidencebymakinggoodeyecontact,speakingclearlyandloudlyenoughtobeheard.Remindthechildtowalkawayfromtheencounter,tellthebullyfirmlythatheisinthewrong,andtotellateacher,parentorotheradultwhatishappening.
Parentsofbulliesshouldalsointervenetostopthebehaviorandmakeitclearthatbullyingwillnotbetoleratedorignored.Onestudyshowedthat60%ofboyswhowereidentifiedasbulliesingraderssixthroughninehadatleastonecriminalconvictionbyage24years,between35%and40%ofthesechildrenhadthreeormorecriminalconvictionsbythatsameage.Psychologicalcounselingisoftenhelpfulandmayidentifytheunderlyingproblemssuchasdepressionorconductdisorder.
