Salemwasfoundedinthe1700sbytheMoravians.TheyspokeGerman,andtheircommunitywasreligiouslybased,withsinglemenandsinglewomenlivingapartinseparatedormitories.TheMoraviansgreatlyvaluedwomen'sworkandbrainpower.Infact,oneofthenation'soldestboardingschoolsforyoungwomen-theMoravians'SalemAcademyfoundedin1772-isstillinoperation.
