Realizingshemayhavemadeanimportantdiscovery,Bertocchiniteamedupwithotherresearcherstoconductfurtherresearch.Theybeganbyplacing100wormsonsomeplasticbagsanddiscoveredthatovera24-hourperiod,thewormsmanagedtochewthrough92milligramsofplastic.Theresearchersmakeanappropriatejudgmentthatatthisrate,thegroupofwormscoulddegrade(降解)anaverage-sized5.5-gramplasticbagwithinamonth.Toruleoutthepossibilitythatchewingwascausingthedegradation,theresearchersspreadthesoftwetsubstanceinsidethebodyofsomerecentlydeadwormsonasheetofplastic.Sureenough,eventheliquidwasabletoeatthroughthematerial,confirmingthatthewormshaveplastic-digestingenzymes(酶).

Whilethenewsiscertainlyencouraging,noteveryoneisconvinced.TheMichiganStateUniversity’sRamaniNarayanbelievesthetinypiecesofmicroplasticsreleasedbytheplastic-eatingwormswouldpickupharmfulsubstancesandtransportthemupthefoodchain,causing,evenmore,harmtotheenvironmentandhumanhealth.SusanSelke,directorofMichiganStateUniversitySchoolofPackaging,isconcernedthatthewormswillnotbeabletosurviveinanoxygen-freelandfillswherelargeamountsofwastematerialareburiedundertheearth.

However,Bertocchiniisnotplanningtotransportwormarmiestolandfills.Instead,theresearcherwantstoidentifytheenzymethathelpsdegradetheplastic.Theresearchersays,maybewecanfindthemolecule(分子)andproduceitonanindustriallevel,ratherthanusingamillionwormsinaplasticbag.
