DeanFurness
Toovercomechallenges,stopcomparingyourselftoothers
Itseemswehavebeenmeasuredalmostallofourlives, whenweareinfants,withourheightandourweight, andaswegrewitbecameourspeedandourstrength.
Andeveninschooltherearetestscoresandtodaywithoursalariesandjobperformance. Itseemsasifthosepersonalaveragesarealmostalwaysusedtomeasurewhereweareincomparison toourpeers.
AndIthinkweshouldlookatthatalittledifferently. Thatpersonalaverageisjustthat,it'ssomethingverypersonalandit'sforyou,andIthinkifyoufocusonthatandworktobuildthat,youcanreallystarttoaccomplishsomereallyamazingthings. ThisideastartedformeonaDecembereveningin2011.
Ihadjuststeppedoutsidetodooureveningchorestofeedourhorses.Ihoppedintoourtractor,andafewminuteslater,afivefoottall,700-poundbaleofhayfellfromtheloader,crushingmeintheseatofthetractorandintheprocessshatteringmyT5andT6vertebrae.
Ididn'tloseconsciousness,butIfeltthisbuzzthroughoutmybody,andIknewwhathadhappenedrightaway.Myhandswerereachingformylegs,butmylegsdidn'trecognizeanythingtouchingthem.Andinfact,Icouldn'tfeelanythingfromthecenterofmychestdown.
SothereIwas,about100feetfromthehouse,withmyarmswrappedaroundthesteeringthewheel,tryingtoholdmyselfup,waitingforhelp.AndunlikewhatyouseeinTVandthemovies,asmuchasItriedtogetthedogstogotothehouseandgethelp-- theyjuststaredatme.Well,45minuteslater,mywifecamehome,
andIheardherstepoutofthehouseand,like,normal,ifIneededhelp,"Hey,doyouneedhelp?
"AndIsaid,"Yes."AndtherewasabriefpauseandthenIheardheryell,"Doyouneed9/11help?
"AndagainIyelled,"Yes."Well,notlongafterIwasenjoyingmyveryfirsthelicopterrideallthewaytothehospital.
Now,theinjurywasn'tverydramaticorgraphic.Isimplybrokeaboneortwo.Andintheprocess,IwastoldI'dprobablyneverwalkagain.Itbecameverynormalformetousearopetositupinbed,becausemyabdominalmusclesnolongerwork.
Ortouseaboardtoslideoutofbedintoawheelchair,ortoevenwaitforpeopletoreachthingsforme.EverythingthatIhadlearnedandhadknownaboutmyheightandmystrengthandmybalanceandmymobilitywasblownaway.Myentirepersonalaveragehadbeenreset.
NowyoucouldbesureinthosedaysIwasbeingmeasuredmorethanever,bythedoctorsandnursesforsurebutmaybemoresoinmyownmind,andIfoundmyselfcomparingwhatIthoughtIwasgoingtobeabletodogoingforwardwithwhatIoncewasabletodo.AndIbecameprettyfrustrated.
Ittooksomeveryconsistentproddingfrommywife,whokeptsaying,"Getyoureyesup,"beforeIcouldgetmovingforward.AndIsoonrealizedthatIalmosthadtoforgetaboutthepersonIwasbeforeandthethingsIwasabletodobefore.Ialmosthadtopretenditwasneverme.
AndI'mafraidifIhadnotmadethatrealization,myfrustrationwouldhaveturnedintosomethingmuchhardertorecoverfrom. Now,luckily,afewweekslater,Iwastransferredtoaspecialtyspinalcordrehabhospitalabout10hoursfromhome,andwouldn'tyouknow,thefirstdayofrehabandthefirstsessionwehadsomethingcalledfitclass,
andagroupofusbrokeintoteamstoseewhichteamcoulddothemostrepsintheweightmachine. Now,we'veallbeenthere,haven'tbeentothegyminayearortwo.NeitherhadI.Andsowhatdoyoudo?
Youtrytodowhatyoudidacoupleofyearsago,andyoudoacoupleofsets.Andthenwhatdoyoudo?
Acouplemore.Andyou'refeelingevenbetter,soyoudomore.Andthenexttwoweeksyoucomplaintoyourfamilyabouthowsoreyouare. Well,myteamwentalloutandwewon,wewonbig,andforthenextthreedaysIcould notstraightenmyarms,whichisn'tthatbigadealexceptwhenyou'reinawheelchairandthat'sreallywhatyouhavetousetogetaround.
Andthatprovedtobeaveryimportantlessonforme.ItwasonethingthatIcouldn'tcomparemyselftomyself,butevenaroundpeopleinthesamesituationinthathospital,IfoundthatIcouldn'ttrytokeeppaceorsetpacewiththemaswell,
andIwasleftwithreallyonlyonechoiceandthatwastofocusonwhoIwasatthatpointintimewithwhereIneededtogoandtogetbacktowhoIneededtobe. Forthenextsixweeks,forseventoeighthoursaday,that'swhatIdid.
Ibuiltlittlebylittle,and,asyoumightexpect,whenyou'rerecoveringfromaspinalcordinjury,you'regoingtohaveabadday.Youmighthaveafewinarow.WhatIfoundoutisthatgoodandbadreallydidn'thavealotofmeaningunlessIhadthecontextofknowingwhatmyaveragewas.
ItwasreallyuptometodecideifsomethingwasbadorgoodbasedonwhereIwasatthatpointintime,anditwasinmycontroltodetermineifitreallywasabadday.Infact,itwasmydecisiononwhetherornotIcouldstopastreakofbaddays.
AndwhatIfoundduringthattimeawayfromhomeisIneverhadabadday,evenwitheverything goingon.Therewerepartsofmydaythatwerecertainlynotaspleasantastheycouldbe,butitwasneveranentirelybadday.
SoI'mguessingthatallofyouhavebeenthroughameetingthatprobablydidn'tgoverywell,oracommutethatwasn'tasgreatasyouwouldlikeit,orevenburneddinneratnight.Didthosethingsreallyruinyourentireday?
WhatIfoundinthosescenariosisthequickeryoumoveontowhat'snext,thequickeryoucanstartattackingthings.Andbymovingontonextasfastaspossible,youshrinkthetimeyouspendinthosebadscenariosanditgivesmoretimeforthegood.And,asaresult,thegoodoutweighsthebad,youraverageincreasesandthat'sjusthowthemathworks.
Itdidn'tmattertomeifI'dspentthemorningreallystrugglingwithmymedication,oratlunchmylegsbeingveryspastic,orevenifIhadfallenoutofmywheelchair.Askmywife.Ithappensquiteoften.She'shere.Theywerejustsmallpartsofmydayandsmallpartsofmyaverage.
Andso,inthemonthsandyearsthatfollowed,Icontinuedtotrytoattackthingsinthatway,andbeforeIknewitIwasbeingpresentedwithsomeprettyincrediblechallenges,likecompletingamarathoninawheelchair.
Inearly2016,Imetmyphysicaltherapist,andafterafewreallygruelingsessions,shemusthavesensedsomething,becauseshepulledmeasideandsaid,"Youknow,youshoulddoahalfmarathon.Inyourwheelchair.And,ohyeah,it'sin10weeks."AndIthoughtinmymind,"You'recrazy."Ididn'thaveaworkoutplan.
Ididn'thaveanywayofknowinghowfastIneededtogoorhowfarIwassupposedtogo.ButIsimplygottowork,andIstartedtrackingeveryworkout,everyday,andIsimplywantedtobeasgoodasorasfastasIwasthepriorday.AndintheendIreallycreatedthataverageformyselfandItriedtobuildonthatasmuchasIcould.
Well,Ifinishedthatracerightintimewithwhatmyaverageshouldhavebeen,andsomewherealongthewayIkindofclosedthedooronwhoIoncewas.ThatpersonwhoIwasbeforeandallthosethingsIthoughtIwasabletodoreallydidn'tmatter.Infact,walkingagainreallydidn'tmatter.
