ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationA834;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(eindicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.
1.Scope
1.1ThisspecificationcoversagroupofrequirementsthataremandatoryrequirementswhenusedinconjunctionwiththefollowingironcastingspecificationsissuedbyASTM:

1.2Thisspecificationalsocoversagroupofsupplementaryrequirementswhichmaybeappliedtotheabovespecificationsasindicatedherein.Theseareprovidedforusewhenadditionaltestingorinspectionisdesiredandapplyonlywhenspecifiedindividuallybythepurchaserintheorder.
1.3Therequirementsoftheindividualmaterialspecifica-tion,andthisgeneralspecificationshallprevailinthesequencenamed.

4.OrderingInformation
4.1Thepurchaseorderforcastingsorderedunderthisspecificationshallstipulatetheapplicablematerialspecifica-tion(s,gradeofiron,andanyoptionsoradditionstothebasicrequirements,includingthesupplementaryrequirementsin-cludedinthisspecification.
5.TensileRequirements
5.1Theindividualproductspecificationsvaryastowhethertensiontestsarerequired.Forthisreason,andtodeterminespecifictestrequirements,theindividualproductspecificationshallbereviewed.Whenrequired,tensiontestsshallbedeterminedinaccordancewithTestMethodsE8.
6.ChemicalRequirements
6.1Theindividualproductspecificationsvaryastowhetherchemicalanalysisisrequired.Todeterminespecificrequire-ments,theindividualproductspecificationshouldbereviewed.6.2SamplingshallbeconductedinaccordancewithTestMethodE59.SpectrographicorothermethodssuchasthoseinTestMethodsE30andE351maybeusedforchemicalanalysis.Intheeventofadisputeregardingchemicalcompo-sition,TestMethodsE351andE30shallbeusedforrefereepurposes.
6.3Thechemicalanalysisfortotalcarbonshallbemadeonchilledpencil-typespecimensorfromthinwafersapproxi-mately1⁄32in.(0.8mmthickcutfromtestcoupons.Drillingsarenotreliablebecauseofaprobablelossofgraphite.
6.4Chemicalanalysisresultsshallberounded,inaccor-dancewithPracticeE29,tothenearestunitinthelastright-handplaceofvaluesinthetableofchemicalrequire-ments.
6.5Aproductanalysismaybemadebythepurchaserfrommaterialrepresentingeachheat,lot,orcasting.Theanalysisshallbemadeonrepresentativematerial.Samplesforcarbon
analysisshallbetakennocloserthan¼in.toacastsurface,andshallfollowthepracticein5.3,exceptwherethesizeorshapeofthecastingdoesnotpermitsuchsampling.Thechemicalcompositionthusdeterminedshallmeettherequire-mentsspecifiedintheapplicablespecificationforthegradeinvolved.
7.Workmanship,Finish,andAppearance
7.1Allcastingsshallbemadeinaworkman-likemannerandshallconformtothedimensionsondrawingsfurnishedbythepurchaserbeforemanufactureisstarted.Ifthepatternissuppliedbythepurchaser,thedimensionsofthecastingshallbeaspredictedbythepattern.
8.Sampling
8.1Alotshallconsistofoneofthefollowing:
8.1.1Allthemetalfromasingleheatinginabatch–typemeltingfurnace.
8.1.2Allthemetalpouredfromtwoormorebatch–typemeltingfurnacesintoasingleladleorasinglecasting.
8.1.3Allthemetalpouredfromacontinuousmeltingfurnaceforagivenperiodoftimebetweenchangesincharge,processingconditions,oraim-forchemistry,or4h,whicheveristheshorterperiod.
8.1.3.1Thepurchasermayagreetoextendthe4-htimeperiodto8hifthemanufacturercandemonstratesufficientprocesscontroltowarrantsuchanextension.
9.Inspection
9.1Alltestsandinspectionsrequiredbythisspecificationshallbeperformedbythemanufacturerorotherreliablesourceswhoseserviceshavebeencontractedforbythemanufacturer.Completerecordsofalltestsandinspectionsshallbemaintainedbythemanufacturerandshallbeavailableforreviewbythepurchaser.
9.2Themanufacturershallaffordthepurchaser’sinspectorallreasonablefacilitiesnecessarytosatisfythatthematerialisbeingproducedandfurnishedinaccordancewiththeappli-cablespecification.Foundryinspectionbythepurchasershallnotinterfereunnecessarilywiththemanufacturer’soperations.9.3Whenagreeduponbetweenmanufacturerandpur-chaser,testspecimensorunbrokentestbarsfromthesamelotshallbesavedforaperiodof3monthsafterdateofthetestreport.
9.4Whenunbrokentestbarsarereprocessedwithcastingsforrehearing,testspecimensfromthesebarsshallbesaved,asdescribedin9.3.
9.5Thepurchaserreservestherighttoperformanyinspec-tionssetforthinthespecificationwheresuchinspectionsaredeemednecessarytoassurethatsuppliesandservicesconformtotheprescribedrequirements.
10.Repair
10.1Anyrepairshallbemadeinaccordancewiththerequirementsoftheindividualspecificationusingproceduresqualifiedbythemanufacturerforthetypeofrepairinvolved.11.RejectionandRehearing
11.1Castingswhichfailtoconformtotherequirementsspecifiedwheninspectedortestedbythepurchaserorhisagent

mayberejected.Rejectionshallbereportedtothemanufac-turerorsupplierpromptlyandinwriting.Incaseofdissatis-factionwiththetestresults,themanufacturerorsuppliermaymakeclaimforarehearing.
12.PackagingandPackageMarking
12.1Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthecontractorpurchaseorder,cleaning,preservation,andpackagingofcastingsshallbeinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’scommercialpractice.Packingandmarkingshallalsobeadequatetoidentifythecontentsandtoensureacceptanceandsafedeliverybythecarrierforthemodeoftransportationemployed.
12.2GovernmentProcurement—Whenspecifiedinthecon-tractorpurchaseorder,marking
