liketotravel.Thebeachestherearethebestintheworld/andthe
wavesarethehighest.Andtheweatherisneithertoohotnortoocold
alltheyeararound.Thewaterisveryclear,too.It’stoowonderfulfor
peopletodowatersportsthere,justlikesurfing,diving,water-skiing
orswimming.Especiallysurfingthereissoexcitingthatmanysurfers
andtravelersfromallovertheworldareattractedeveryyear.
PeopleonbothsidesofthePacificOcean,inJapanandin
America,dreamofseeingthesebeautifulislandsinthemiddleof
ocean.Theyalsowanttoseesunsetovertheocean.Inthetropical
lands,thesundropslikeaballofgoldenfireintothesea,anditdrop
soquicklythatyoucanalmostseeitmove.Peopleoftenhaveaquiet,
peacefultimehere,perfectforaleisurelywalkalongthewater.
ThefirstpeoplecametoHawaiinearlytwothousandyearsago,
butskyscraperhotelswereonlybuiltinthelast25years.Nowyet
airplanesmakeitpossibletoflytoHawaiiforaweekendfromTokyo
orSanFranciscoorLosAngeles.

Whereverpeoplecomefrom,theyreallywanttoseetheoriginal
beautyofHawaii.
ABraveMother
Liza,amiddle-agedwoman,wenttopreparelunch,leavingBarney,

her3-year-old-son,playingbyhimselfinthebackyard.
Allofasudden,asharpcryofBarneycameintothemother’s
andLizarushedintothebackyardandfoundabigsnakeentwining
thelittlechildwithitsbodyandtryingtoswallowtheboy.Lizawas
terrifiedandquiteangry.Shemadeuphermindtosavehersonfrom
thesnake’smouth.
Itwasmother’slovethatmadeLizaforgetwhatshefaced.She
tookupanoldhatchetfromthegroundandstruckthesnakewithall
herstrength.
Onetwowiththehatchet,Lizahitthesnakeagainandagain,but
shefeltasifshewasstrikingamassofsolidrubber.Thelittleboy
voiceandbreathweregettingweakerandweaker.Liza’sheartwas
brokenandshegotnearlymad.
SuddenlyLizaputasidethehatchetandthrewherselftothesnake,
openedhermouthandbitintothesnake’sbackasiftearingatough
steak.Lizawasreallymad.
Byandbyasmallpieceoffleshwasbitoff.Lizapickedupthe
hatchetagainandhitatthewoundinthesnake’sbackmadlyand
savagely.

Stinkingbloodwassprayingoutofthesnake’sbody.Thesnake
wassobadlywoundedthatitletgoofBarneyandmovedbackinto
theforesthurriedly.Ithadneverimaginedhowhumanbeingshad
suchsharpteeth.Onhalfwayhome,thesnakelay,dead.
AChildReadyToBeBorn
Onceuponatime,therewasachildreadytobeborn.Onedaythe

childaskedGod,"Theytellmeyouaregoingtosendmetoearth
tomorrowbuthowamIgoingtolivetherebeingsosmalland
helpless?

"Amongthemanyangles,Ihavechosenoneforyou.Shewillbe
waitingforyouandwilltakecareofyou."Godreplied.
"ButhereinHeaven,Idonothingelsebutsingingandsmiling!
That'senoughformetobehappy."
Godsaid,"Yourangelwillsingforyouandwillalsosmileforyou
everyday.Andyouwillfeelyourangel'sloveandbehappy.”
"And",saidthechild,"howamIgoingtobeabletounderstand
whenpeopletalktome,ifIdon'tknowthelanguagethatmentalk?

"That'seasy,"Godtoldthechild,"Youranglewilltellyouthemost
beautifulandsweetwordsyouhaveneverheard,andwithmuch
patienceandcare,yourangelwillteachyouhowtospeak."
ThechildlookedupatGodandsaid,"AndwhatamIgoingtodo
whenIwanttotalktoyou?

Godsmiledatthechildandsaid,"yourangelwillplaceyourhands
togetherandteachyouhowtopray."
Thechildsaid,"I'veheardthatonearththerearebadmen,Who

Godputhisarmaroundthechild,saying,"Yourangelwilldefend
you-evenifitmeansriskinglife!
"
AtthatmomenttherewasmuchpeaceinHeaven,butvoicesfrom
earthcouldalreadybeheard.Thechild,inahurry,askedsoftly,"Oh
God,Iamabouttoleavenowpleasetellmemyangle'sname!

"Itisnothardtoremember,"Godreplied,"Youwillcallyourangel

theislandwasalmostsinking,Lovedecidedtoaskforhelp.Richness
waspassingbyLoveinagrandboat.Lovesaid,"Richness,canyou
takemewithyou?
"Richnessanswered,"No,Ican’t.Therloetisofa
goldandsilverinmyboat.Thereisnoplacehereforyou."
LovedecidedtoaskVanitywhowasalsopassingbyinabeautiful
vessel,"Vanity,pleasehelpme!
""Ican’thelpyouLoouvaer.eYall
wetandmightdamagemyboat."Vanityanswered.
Sadnesswascloseby,soLoveaskedforhelp,"Sadness,letme
gowithyou.""Oh....Love,IamsosadthatIneedtobebymyself!

HappinesspassedbyLovetoo,butshewassohappythatshedid
notevenhearwhenLovecalledher!
