This looks exactlythesameasapresentparticiple,andforthisreasonitisnowcommontocallbothforms 'the -ingform'. Howeveritisusefultounderstandthedifferencebetweenthetwo.Thegerundalwayshasthesamefunctionasanoun(althoughitlookslikeaverb),soitcanbeused:
a. asthesubjectofthesentence:

∙Hunting tigersisdangerous.
∙Flying makesmenervous.
b. asthecomplementoftheverb 'tobe':

Itispossibletocheckwhether 'to� isaprepositionorpartofa to-infinitive:
