1.Oncenegligibleinamount,andthereforeworthyofnomorethanpassingmentioninbankingtexts,off-balancesheetitemsofbanksnowamounttotrillionsofdollarsintheUnitedStates.Theyincludecontingentclaimsthatrepresentavarietyofexposureacrossmarketsandcreditrisks--standbylettersofcredit,interestrateandcurrencyswaps,noteissuancefacilities,options,foreigncurrencies,fixed—andvariable—rateloancommitments,andfuturesandforwardcontractsoneverythingfromTreasurybillstogold.Loancommitmentsareamongthelargestcomponentsoftheoff-balancesheetitemsofbanks.Also,whenaddedtogetheroff-balancesheetitemsexceedthebank’stotalrecordedassets.Thisisalittlemisleading,however,sinceonlysomecontingentclaimsimposea（contingent）liabilityonthebank,andthiscontingentliabilityisonlyafractionofitsoutstandingcontingentclaims.
