ThePalmIslandsarethelargestartificialislandsintheworldandareunderconstructioninDubai,intheUnitedArabEmirates.Theyarebeingdevelopedastourist,leisure,andresidentialresorts,andwillincreasethecoastlineofthecountryby120kilometres.
Afterfouryearsofplanningandcarefulconsiderationoftheenvironmentalissues,constructionstartedin2001.Dutchengineerswithexperienceofreclaiminglandfromtheseawereemployedinthebuildingofthefirsttwoislands.Thesiteforallthreeislandsisanareaoftheseawherethewaterisnotverydeep.Sandistakenfromtheseabedandsprayedintotheconstructionsite.Althoughtheshallowwaterfacilitatesthisprocess,theislandsarestillveryexposedtothecurrentsandtidalmovementsofthesea.Rocksareusedtoholdthesandinplaceresultinginalargecrescent(月状的)structure.Thisactsasabreakwaterandprotectstheislandsfromthesea.
