Forme,thisself-lovehasservedmygoalofdoingwhatIwanttodowithmylife,regardlessofwhetherIhaveanysupportfromtheoutsideworldornot.
Despiteallthepractice,Idon’tfullyhavethisself-lovethingdown.It’sanongoingproject,andsomedaysarebetterthanothers.Onthenot-so-fabdays,I’vegotsometechniquesIusetouptheanteonfeelinggreataboutme.
1.Makealistofyouraccomplishments.
Iguaranteetherehavebeenmany.Nobelprizenominationsarenotrequired.Thefactthatyoubakeamazingpiesorarethepersonyourfriendsalwayscallwhentheywantasympatheticeararegreatexamples;soaregettingadegreeorknowinghowtochangeyourcar’soil.
Refertothislistwhenyouarefeelingnotsospecial.Soakinallthecoolstuffyou’veachievedandremindyourselfhowawesomeyouare.Personally,IlovethereminderthatIwasvoted“mostunique”inhighschool.
2.Learnsomethingnew.
Youdon’thavetobecomeanexpertonanentiresubject(unlessthat’sappealing).Learnhowtosay“haveaniceday”inGerman(“Habteinenschönentag!
”),checkoutaTedtalk,orhitupWikipedia’s“randomarticle”linkuntilyoufindsomethinginteresting.
Pointingourfocustowardsomethingoutsideofourselvesisstimulating;italsoexpandsourworldandourperspective.Additionally,learningmakesyourbrainhappy.
3.Askyourverybestfriend/partner/favoritefamilymemberwhattheyloveaboutyouandspecificallyhowyouareamazing.
Takenoteofwhattheysayandrefertoitlaterwhenyouarefeelingabitunloved.Whileourviewofourselvesisofprimaryimportance(itisaboutself-love,afterall),it’salwaysnicetohearsomecomplimentarywordsfromsomeonewelovewhoseopinionwerespect.

6.Putonyourmost-lovedmusicanddance.
Itsanincrediblybasicconcept,butohsoeasy,superfun,andallgoodbaby.Idefyyoutofeelbadafteryourendorphin-pumping,stress-relieving,body-moving,shamelesslypersonalizeddancepartyforone.
7.Practiceself-care.
ThemosteffectivetoolIusetoavoidthenot-so-great-in-the-self-love-departmentdaysisregularself-care.Iengageinmanysmallactsofself-care,withoccasionallargeronesthrownin.
Gettingupearlyenoughtoenjoymymorningcoffee;schedulingmyselfinawaythatdoesn’tcausemyheadtoexplodewhenIlookatmycalendarfortheday;makingsuremyrefrigeratoriswell-stockedsoIdon’tenduphavingolivesandoldceleryfordinner—thesedetailsworkformeandsupportmeinfeelingstrongandsolid.
Isimplyfeelbetteraboutmyselfwhenmylifeisrunningsmoothly.AndsinceI’mtheonerunningmylife,theresponsibilitytomakeitsoismine.
