In1787CaptainBlighwasgivencommandof“TheBounty”,athree-year-oldmerchantship.HismissionwastotransportbreadfruitplantsfromtheislandofTahititotheWestIndies.Weknowthepopularstoryofthisvoyageandtherebellion,inwhichBlighhasbeenpresentedashard,violentandthoroughlyunpleasantcaptain.However,thereisquitealotofevidencetosuggestthatthispictureisfarfrombeingtrue.Heseemstohavebeenunusuallythoughtfulaboutthehealthandwelfareofhismen.Forexamplehemadesurethathiscrewgotexercise,insistedoncleanlinessonhisship,andadoptedthepracticeofgivingthemadrinkwhichpreventedscurvyeveryday.
WhenCaptainBligharrivedinTahiti,itbecameclearthatitwouldbesomemonthsbeforethebreadfruittreeswerereadytobetakentotheWestIndies.Insteadofgoingoffrightaway,hegavehiscrewextendedshoreleave.Thismayhavebeenamistakeasmanywereunhappyaboutleavingwhenthetimecame.Finally,onthereturnjourneytherebelliontookplace.TheshipwasunderthecommandoftherebelsandCaptainBlighhadtoleaveinasmallboat.
CaptainBligh’sachievementwastogettodrylandsuccessfully.Itisoneofthesupremeexamplesofseamanship.ApartfromBlightherewere18membersofhiscrewsailinginanopenboatabout23feetlongand7feetwide.Theytookwiththem25gallonsofwater,150poundsofbreadand30poundsofpork.Theyhadnogunsorotherweapons.Theboatwassolowinthewaterthatitseemedlikelytosinkatanytime.OnoneoccasionCaptainBlightriedtolandonanislandtogetmorewater.Heandhismenwereattackedbyhostilenativesandoneofthecrewwaskilled.AtthispointBlighdecidedtosaildirectlytotheDutchsettlementontheislandofTimorwithoutstopping.Thedistancewasabout4,000miles.Thevoyagetookabout42daysandhehadnoadvancednavigationalequipment.However,hisskillandcommitmentprovedequaltothetaskandamazingly
