TheideaofhandlingwastemanagementthroughsportcametoenvironmentalactivistUdaySinghafterwatchinganIndianPremierLeaguecricketgame.

"WewantedtotryandharnessthespiritofcompetitionandsportsmanshipthatIndiadisplaysincricket,forpublichealth,"Singhsaid.

Eachteamthereafterconsistedofaguestmunicipality'sSanitaryInspectorasteamleaderandtwogueststaffaccompaniedbythreeofficialsfromthehostcity.

Pushingtrolleysdoortodoorbetweenthehoursofsevenandeleveneverymorning,eachteamwasgivenascorebasedonhowithandledthecollectionprocess.

Teamsunloadedtrolleysfullofwasteatthecollectioncentreinthetown'swatertowerpremisesbeforecontinuingontheirrounds.

SriLankahasnotbeenatpeacewithitselfforaverylongtime.Wehavejustcompletedyearthreeofafragilecease-firethatcameattheendofabloody20yearmixtureofcivilwarandethniccrisis.PovertyiswidespreadinSriLankaandamajorchallengeistoensurethatpoorpeopleinthe95percentofthecountrywhichwasnotaffectedbythetsunamiarenotforgotten.Therearehundredsofthousandsofinternallydisplacedpeoplealreadylivingintemporaryshelter,notasaresultofthetsunami,butfromtheconflict10-15yearsbefore.
