Anyway,regardingwhattheletterwasabout,wellbasically,itwasjustinformingmethatIhadbeenacceptedontotheirMaster’sprograminFinance,soitwasreallygreatnewsforme,becausethiswasthecoursethatImostwantedtostudy,andoutofallthevariousuniversitiesthatIappliedto,Leedswasdefinitelytopofmylist,asitwastheonethatmostappealedtome,intermsofboththecoursecontentandsociallife.

So,asyoucanimagine,Iwasoverthemoonafterreceivingtheoffer.Imean,itfeltlikealltheyearsofhardworkI’veputintomystudiesseemedtohavefinallypaidoff,soitwaslikeadreamcometrueforme,itreallywas.

Andfinallythen,withregardtowhythisletterwasimportant,well,Ithinkitgoeswithoutsayingthatitwasextremelyimportant,becauseessentially,itmeansthatI’mgonnabeabletostudyabroad,whichI’msurewillhaveahugeimpactonmyfuturecareer,asitwillhopefullyenablemetoapplyforjobswhichIwouldn’thaveotherwisebeenconsideredfor.

Andaswellasthis,Ireckonthatstudyingabroadwillhelpmebecomemorematureandindependent,whichI’venoticedhashappenedwithafewofmyfriendswhohavespentsometimeabroad,andI’msurethis’llhaveapositiveeffectonmylifeingeneral.

Iusuallydonotliketowatchadvertisementbetweenamovie/TVprogrammeandlargecommercialbreaksarequiteannoyingtome.Ipersonallythinkthatthebestwayofadvertisingisusingbillboards,whichcanleadyoutorememberthebrandnameforeverwithoutactuallyannoyingyou.

Well,thebestadvertisementIhaveeverseenthatIstilllikeforitsuniquenesswasonahighwayintheUnitedArabEmiratesandIreallylikedtheideaofthisadvertisement.Onedaywhilepassingthemainroadabigbillboardcaughtmyeyes.Itwasdesignedtolooklikethefiltrationzoneofacigarettewhichiscommonlyknownasthecigarettebutt.Thelargebillboardwasquitedifferentinshapeanditpresentedthemessage‘StopsmokingevenMarlboro’quitevisibly.

Istoleaglanceatthebillboardandthoughtaboutthemessageitconveyed.Iactuallydidnotthinkmuchandforgotaboutit.AfteranhourIfoundmyselfinfrontofabeachwithapacketofMarlborocigaretteinmypocket.WhileIwaslightingacigarette,IwaswonderingwhyIboughtapacketofMarlboro?

Thehorseinthetitlewasatoyhorseoriginallysupposedtobesoldbyhismaker.ThelittlewoodenhorseisveryloyalandwantsonlytostaywithhisUnclePederwhocraftedhim.However,sadlythetoymakerisforcedoutofbusinessasmassproducedtoysbecomeavailable,andthelittlewoodenhorsesetsouttotryandmakehisfortunesothetwoofthemcanstaytogether.Terriblethingshappentothehorse,heissometimeslonelyandunhappy.Eventually,though,hedoesmakehisfortune(Ican’trememberhow)andreturnshomeonlytofindthetoymakerhasvanished!

Itisheart-breaking.Intheend,thelittlewoodenhorseandthetoymakerarereunitedbychanceandthereisatlastahappyendingafteraharrowingsetofadventures.

ThereasonthisbookisimportanttomeisbecauseitisthefirstbookIrememberreallywantingtoreadformyself.Mymumanddadwouldtaketurnstoreadmejustonechapteratnight,buttherewerelotsandlotsofchapters–abouttwentyIthink,andIwassoupsetnotknowinghowthestorywouldendifonechapterwasfinishedandthepoorlittlewoodenhorsewasleftindistress!

Icouldreadabit,butnotthatwell,andnotwellenoughtoreadsilentlyinmyhead.Anyway,onenight,aftermyparentshadclosedthebookandleftmealone,Icarriedonreadingallbymyself.Ihadtoreadoutloud,andthestorywassosadIwassobbingasIread,whichmadeitevenharderformetogetthewordsoutandfinishthestory.Evenso,Icarriedonreadingrighttotheendandfortunatelythestorydidendhappily!

Icanstillrememberthis,eventhoughImusthaveonlybeenaboutfouryearsoldatthetime.Myparentsremembertheepisodetoo.Theycouldhearmeinmyroomreadingaloudandcrying,andtheysaiditwasheart-rendingtolistento,butalsoquiteimpressive,asIwassostubbornlydeterminedtodothis,andonmyown.

Ihaveneverre-readthebookasanadult.I’mafraidifIdidandfounditwasn’treallyverygoodorverywellwrittenitmightspoilthememoryforme.Iprefertoimagineitasthemostbrilliantstoryeverwrittenevenifthatisn’ttrueatall!

Sothebookisspecialbecauseitisprobablythebookthatencouragedmetoread,aswellasbeingprobablymyearliestmemory.
