通常，人们在节日里都会打扮得光鲜亮丽，走亲访友，互道问候。
但西方的万圣节（11月1日）却是个例外，虽然也是欢声笑语、热闹非凡，人们却争先扮成鬼怪，一点儿不担心失了往日的绅士淑女形象。
这种“装神弄鬼”的做法和节日的起源紧密相连。
翻开英文词典，让我们来研究研究halloween吧!
《朗文当代高级英语辞典》（第4版）中的halloween（英文释义为Inthepast,peoplebelievedthesoulsofdeadpeopleappearedonhalloween，大家不难发现，这一节日的起源和鬼有关。
彼时，人们要扮成鬼怪摸样以吓跑出来作恶的鬼怪们。
也算是“以毒攻毒”吧!
当然，万圣节流传到今天已经完全没有了先前的迷信色彩，用来吓走妖魔鬼怪的节日象征物“杰克灯”更多的是作为节日的装点;不但如此，人们的打扮早已不再局限于怪兽（monster）、鬼魂（ghost）、骷髅（skeleton）和巫婆（witch）等超自然形象（supernaturalfigures），化妆服（costume）还包括小说中的人物扮相、名人明星等，比如忍者（ninja/?

世界各地，尤其是英语国家，会在万圣节举行各种狂欢派对，如果不以一副“鬼样子”参加，那反倒显得格格不入了!
万圣节里，最高兴的莫过于小孩子们了：
他们身着专门为万圣节准备的服装，挨家挨户地敲门，高喊着“trickortreat（不给糖就捣乱;招待还是捣蛋）”（万圣节时小孩子上门讨糖吃时说的话）。
要是讨不到treat怎么办呢?
“小鬼”们的trick可多着呢：
踩坏门口的南瓜灯，往门口倒垃圾……不过多数大人还是非常乐意款待这些“不速之客”的，或是给糖或是给些零钱，所以孩子们总是能满载而归。
