Furtherstudyshowedthateachlittlebacteriumhadachainofdenseparticlesinside,which

provedmagnetic.Thebacteriahadmadethemselvesintolittlemagnetsthatcouldlineupwiththeearth’smagnet.

Thebignewswasthatalivingthing,evenasimplebacterium,canmakemagnetite.Thatledtoasearchtoseewhetheranimalsmighthaveit..Byusingaspecialinstrumentcalledmagnetometer,scientistswereabletofindmagnetiteinbeesandbirds,andeveninfish.Ineachanimal,exceptforthebee,themagneticstuffwasalwaysinorclosertothebrain.
