  Eatingadiethighinprocessedfoodincreasestheriskofdepression,researchsuggests.What’smore,peoplewhoateplentyofvegetables,fruitandfishactuallyhadalowerriskofdepression,theUniversityCollegeLondonteamfound.

Dataondietamong3,500middle-agedcivilservantswerecomparedwiththeiremotionalstatefiveyearslater,aBritishjournalreported.Theysplittheparticipantsintotwotypesofdiet—thosewhoateadietlargelybasedonwholefood,whichincludeslotsoffruit,vegetablesandfish,andthosewhoateamainlyprocessedfooddiet,suchassweeteneddesserts,friedfood,processedmeat,refinedgrainsandhighfatdairyproducts.Afteraccountingforfactorssuchasgender,age,education,physicalactivity,smokinghabitsandchronic(慢性的)diseases,theyfoundasignificantdifferenceinthefuturedepressionriskwiththedifferentdiets.

Thosewhoatethemostwholefoodhada26%lowerriskoffuturedepressionthanthosewhoatetheleastwholefood.Bycontrast,peoplewithadiethighinprocessedfoodhada58%higherriskofdepressionthanthosewhoateadietlowinprocessedfoods.

StudyauthorDr.ArchanaSinghManouxpointedouttherewasachancethatthefindingcouldbeexplainedbylifestylefactortheyhadnotaccountedfor.HealsopointedinapaperthataMediterraneandietwasassociatedwithalowerriskofdepression,buttheproblemwiththatisifyouliveinBritain,thelikelihoodofyoueatingaMediterraneandietisnotveryhigh.

Dr.AndrewMcCulloeh,chiefexecutiveoftheMentalHealthFoundation,said,thisstudyaddstoanexistingbodyofsolidresearchthatshowsthestronglinksbetweenwhatweeatandourmentalhealth.
