have too many other things on our plates. Putting things off—big or small—is part of beinghuman.

Butprocrastinationdoeshaveconsequences.Whenyourprocrastinationleavesyoufeelingdiscouraged,itistimetotakeaction,andoneofthebestwaystogetridofitistomakeanun-schedule.

Anun-scheduleisaweeklycalendarofallthewaysinwhichyourtimeisalreadyaccountedfor.Youconsidernotonlyyourtimedcommitmentssuchasclassesandmeetings,butalsoyouruntimedactivitiessuchasmeals,exercise,timewithfriends,andthelike.Onceyouhavemadeyourun-schedule,youmaybeabletoseeyourtimeisoftenfilledwithmoreactivitiesthanyourealize,forinstance,thatyoureallydon’thavefivehourstospendwritingonthenightbeforeyourpaperisdue.Procrastinators’viewsoftimetendtobeunrealistic,andtheun-schedulecanhelpyououtlinearealisticplan.Byplanningaccordingly,youwillnotonlygetabetternight’ssleep,youmayalsoendupwithabetterpaper.

Theun-schedulemightalsobeagoodwaytogetstartedonalargerproject,suchasatermpaperoranhonorspaper.Youmaythinkthatyouhave“allsemester”togetthewritingdone,butifyoureallymapouthowmuchtimeyouhaveavailabletowriteonadailyandweeklybasis,youwillseethatyouneedtogetstartedsooner,ratherthanlater.Inaddition,theun-schedulemayrevealespeciallybusyweeksormonths,whichwillhelpyoubudgettimeforlong-termprojects.

Perhapsmostimportantly,theun-schedulecanhelpyouexaminehowyouspendyourtime.Youmaybesurprisedathowmuchtimeyouspendwatchingtelevision,anddecidetomakeachange.It’sespeciallyimportantthatyoubuildtimeforfunactivitiesintoyourun-schedule.Otherwise,youwillprocrastinateinordertostealtimeforrelaxation.
