JohnKeatswasbornon31October1795inLondon.Hisfatherworkedataliverystable,butdiedin1804.Hismotherremarried,butdiedoftuberculosisin1810.

KeatswaseducatedataschoolinEnfield.Whenheleftat16,hewasapprenticedtoasurgeon.Hewrotehisfirstpoemin1814.In1816,heabandonedmedicinetoconcentrateonpoetry.Hisfirstvolumeofpoetrywaspublishedthefollowingyear.

In1818,KeatsnursedhisbrotherTomthroughthefinalstagesoftuberculosis,thediseasethathadkilledtheirmother.TomdiedinDecemberandKeatsmovedtohisfriendCharlesBrown'shouseinHampstead.Therehemetandfelldeeplyinlovewithaneighbour,the18-year-oldFannyBrawne.

ThiswasthebeginningofKeats'smostcreativeperiod.Hewrote,amongothers,TheEveofSt.Agnes,LaBelleDamesansMerci,OdetoaNightingaleandToAutumn.Thegroupoffiveodes（颂诗,颂歌）,whichincludeOdetoaNightingale,arerankedamongthegreatestshortpoemsintheEnglishlanguage.

FromSeptember1819,Keatsproducedlittlemorepoetry.Hisfinancialdifficultieswerenowsevere.HebecameengagedtoFannyBrawne,butwithnomoneytherewaslittleprospectofthemmarrying.

Earlyin1820,Keatsbegantodisplaysymptomsoftuberculosis.HissecondvolumeofpoetrywaspublishedinJuly,buthewasbythenveryill.InSeptember,KeatsandhisfriendJosephSevernleftforthewarmerweatherofItaly,inthehopethatthiswouldimproveKeats'shealth.WhentheyreachedRome,Keatswasconfinedtobed.Severnnursedhimdevotedly,butKeatsdiedinRomeon23February1821.HewasburiedintheProtestantCemeteryinRome.
