Thisisreallyatwo-hourpresentationIgivetohighschoolstudents,cutdowntothreeminutes.Anditallstartedonedayonaplane,onmywaytoTED,sevenyearsago.Andintheseatnexttomewasahighschoolstudent,ateenager,andshecamefromareallypoorfamily.
Andshewantedtomakesomethingofherlife,andsheaskedmeasimplelittlequestion.Shesaid,"Whatleadstosuccess?
"AndIfeltreallybadly,becauseIcouldn'tgiveheragoodanswer.SoIgetofftheplane,andIcometoTED.AndIthink,jeez,I'minthemiddleofaroomofsuccessfulpeople!
Sowhydon'tIaskthemwhathelpedthemsucceed,andpassitontokids?
Sohereweare,sevenyears,500interviewslater,andI'mgonnatellyouwhatreallyleadstosuccessandmakesTED-sterstick.
【Andthefirstthingispassion.】
FreemanThomassays,"I'mdrivenbymypassion."TED-stersdoitforlove;theydon'tdoitformoney.CarolColettasays,"IwouldpaysomeonetodowhatIdo."Andtheinterestingthingis:
ifyoudoitforlove,themoneycomesanyway.
【Work!
】
RupertMurdochsaidtome,"It'sallhardwork.Nothingcomeseasily.ButIhavealotoffun."Didhesayfun?
Rupert?
Yes!
TED-stersdohavefunworking.Andtheyworkhard.Ifigured,they'renotworkaholics.They'reworkafrolics.
?
Rupert?
【Good!
】
精通
AlexGardensays,"Tobesuccessfulputyournosedowninsomethingandgetdamngoodatit."There'snomagic;it'spractice,practice,practice.
【Andit'sfocus.】
NormanJewisonsaidtome,"Ithinkitallhastodowithfocusingyourselfononething."
【Andpush!
】
强迫
DavidGallosays,"Pushyourself.Physically,mentally,you'vegottapush,push,push."Yougottapushthroughshynessandself-doubt.GoldieHawnsays,"Ialwayshadself-doubts.Iwasn'tgoodenough;Iwasn'tsmartenough.Ididn'tthinkI'dmakeit."Nowit'snotalwayseasytopushyourself,andthat'swhytheyinventedmothers.(Laughter)FrankGehry—FrankGehrysaidtome,"Mymotherpushedme."
”
【Serve!
】
服务
SherwinNulandsays,"Itwasaprivilegetoserveasadoctor."Nowalotofkidstellmetheywanttobemillionaires.AndthefirstthingIsaytothemis:
"OK,wellyoucan'tserveyourself;yougottaserveotherssomethingofvalue.Becausethat'sthewaypeoplereallygetrich."
“
【Ideas!
】
点子
TED-sterBillGatessays,"Ihadanidea:
foundingthefirstmicro-computersoftwarecompany."I'dsayitwasaprettygoodidea.Andthere'snomagictocreativityincomingupwithideas—it'sjustdoingsomeverysimplethings.AndIgivelotsofevidence.
【Persist!
】
坚持
JoeKraussays,"Persistenceisthenumberonereasonforoursuccess."Yougottapersistthroughfailure.Yougottapersistthroughcrap!
Whichofcoursemeans"Criticism,Rejection,AssholesandPressure."(Laughter)So,thebig—theanswertothisquestionissimple:
