众所周知，十几年来电子商务实践正在中国乃至全世界范围内迅速发展，许多新的商务模式、方式、技术以及法律、规章不断涌现。

"中国互联网络信息中心"的调查表明，自1997年开始，我国因特网用户呈现几何级数增长。

到2000年6月，国内共有因特网用户1000万，顶级域名.cn下注册的域名有近6万个之多。

因特网的迅速扩展为我国电子商务活动提供了极为广阔的发展空间。

说到淘宝是如何发展到今天的地位，免不了要提及淘宝战胜eBay的故事。

事情是这样的:

易趣最早把美国的C2C在线销售的概念引到中国，创立了易趣网，后来（2002年）eBay收购易趣，改为eB，成为刚刚兴起的电商市场的先行老大，大约占有全国网购市场的三分之二，当然那时候的市场规模还很小。

淘宝是2003年5月成立的，用了大约2年多的时间，到2005年，淘宝网购市场的规模超过中国eBay，两家公司好比坐标轴上的两条线，横轴为市场占有率，纵轴为时间线，一条上扬线，一条下降线，双方在2005年时间点交汇，此后淘宝继续一路高飞猛进，知道占有全国市场的份额的80%以上。

而eBay一路下滑到个位数，最终把公司转手出让，退出中国C2C市场。

网络和电商业对于淘宝战胜eBay有很多描述，其中主要的是淘宝免费交易的大旗。

在一个市场培育的早期阶段，在网上做生意的都是很小的个人卖家，免费模式无疑是杀伤对手、赢得用户最有力的武器。
