Earlyinthe19thcenturyCanadahadthreeuniversitiesamongtheworld'stophundreduniversities,whichincludedMcGillUniversity.McGillUniversitywascharteredintheeraofBritishcolonialrulingCanada,46yearsearlierthantheCanadianfederalgovernmentestablishment,isCanada'soldestuniversity.

Since1926,McGillUniversityhasbeenamemberofAAU（AssociationofAmericanUniversities）（atotalof62universitiesinNorthAmericawereselected,onlytwoCanadianuniversitiesinthisleague,theotheristheUniversityofToronto）.

McGillUniversityislocatedinMontreal,Quebec,whichisCanada'ssecondlargestcitylocatedintheconfluenceoftheOttawaRiverandtheSt.LawrenceRiver,alsoisCanada'sfinancialandbusinesscenter.In1967thecityheldalarge-scaleWorldExpo,alsohostedthe1976Olympics.
