Farmerscareabouttheircowsverymuch.Theywanttheircowstobehappy.Thefarmersaren’tbusyatcertaintimesoftheyear.Atthesetimes,peoplewashanddecoratetheircows.Twotimesayear,therearespecialcelebrationsforthecows.ThesecelebrationsarelikeThanksgivingDayintheUnitedStates.

Oldcowscannotworkonfarms.InIndia,itisagainstthelawtokillacow.Sofarmerssendtheiroldcowsawayfromthefarm.Thecowswalkaroundfreelyinthestreets.Peoplegivetheirownfoodtothecows,andcarsarecarefulnottohitthecows.Therearespecialanimalhospitalsforoldorsickcows.Thegovernmentandsomerichpeoplepayforthesehospitals.

PeopleinothercountriesdonotunderstandwhytheIndiangovernmentspendsmoneyoncows.TherearemanypoorpeopleinIndiawhoneedmoney.IndianssaythatAmericansspendmoremoneyoncatsanddogs.PeopleinIndiacareforover200millioncowseveryyear.Theyhavecaredforcowsforalongtime.Itisatraditionofthousandsofyears.

1.InIndiaaboutonebillionpeopletakecareofthefarmsandtheanimals.

2.Cowsaresoimportantonthefarmthatfarmerstrytomakethemhappy.

AnotherveryexpensivestampisanoldAmerican5-cent.ItisstuckonanenvelopewhichwaspostedinMarylandin1846.In1881itwassoldfor$7million.

Newspapershavebeenanimportantpartofeverydaylifesincethe18thcentury.Manycountrieshavehundredsofnewspapers.Howdonewspapereditorsdecidewhichnewsstoriestoprint?

Whydotheyprintsomestoriesandnotothers?

Whatmakesagoodnewspaperstory?

Firstly,itisimportanttoreportnewsstories.TVstationscanreportnewsmuchfasterthannewspapers.Yet,newspapersgivemoreaboutthesamestory.Theymayalsolookatthestoryinanotherway,ortheymayprintcompletelydifferentstoriestothoseonTV.

Secondly,anewsstoryhastobeinterestingandunusual.Peopledon’twanttoreadstoriesabouteverydaylife.Asaresult,manystoriesareaboutsomekindofdangerandseemtobe“bad”news.Forexample,newspaperneverprintstoriesaboutplaneslandingsafely,insteadtheyprintstoriesaboutplaneaccidents.

Anotherfactorisalsoveryimportantinmanynewsstories.Manypeopleareinterestedinnewsinforeigncountries,butmoreprefertoreadstoriesaboutpeople,placesandeventsintheirowncountry.SothestoriesonthefrontpageinChinesenewspapersareusuallyverydifferentfromtheonesinBritish,FrenchandAmericannewspapers.
