2.1TheintroductionofWinstonGroom
WinstonGroomwasborninWashington,D.C.,andwasraisedinMobile,AlabamawhereheattendedUniversityMilitarySchool(nowknownasUMS-WrightPreparatorySchool).Groom'searliestambitionwastobecomealawyerlikehisfather,butinstead,whilealiteraryeditorincollege,hechosetobecomeawriter.GroomattendedtheUniversityofAlabama,wasamemberofDeltaTauDeltaFraternityandtheArmyROTC,graduatingin1965.HeservedintheArmyfrom1965to1969,includingatourofdutyintheVietnamWar.
UponhisreturnfromVietnam,heworkedasareporterfortheWashingtonStar,aWashingtonD.C.newspapercoveringpoliceandcourtroomactivities.Groomretiredasajournalistatage32,andbeganwritinghisfirstnovelBetterTimesThanThesewhichwaspublishedin1978.BetterTimesThanThesewasaboutagroupofpatrioticsoldiersintheVietnamWarwhoselivesandpatriotismbothareshattered.HisnextnovelAsSummersDie(1980)receivedbetterrecognition.HisnovelConversationswiththeEnemy(1982)followsanAmericanVietnamWarsoldierwhoescapesfromaPOWcampandtakesaplanebacktotheUnitedStatesonlytobearrestedfourteenyearslaterfordesertion.ConversationswiththeEnemywasafinalistforthePulitzerPrizein1983.
In1985,GroommovedbacktoMobile,AlabamawherehebegantoworkonthenovelForrestGump.ForrestGumpwaspublishedin1986;however,itdidnotmakeGroomabestsellingauthoruntilitwasadaptedintoafilmwiththesamenamein1994starringTomHanksinthetitleroleofForrestGump.Thefilmpropelledthenoveltobestsellerstatusanditsold1.7millioncopiesworldwide.
GroomdevoteshistimetowritinghistorybooksaboutAmericanwars.HehaslivedmostrecentlyinPointClear,Alabama,andLongIsland,NewYorkwithhiswife,Anne-Clintonanddaughter,Carolina.GroomwasanoldfriendofwriterWillieMorris,datingtotheirdaystogetherinBridgehampton,LongIsland,NewYork.
2.2Thehistoryoffeminism
Thehistoryoffeminisminvolvesthestoryoffeministmovementsandoffeministthinkers.Dependingontime,cultureandcountry,feministsaroundtheworldhavesometimeshaddifferentcausesandgoals.Mostwesternfeministhistoriansassertthatallmovementsthatworktoobtainwomen'srightsshouldbeconsideredfeministmovements,evenwhentheydidnot(ordonot)applythetermtothemselves.Otherhistoriansassertthatthetermshouldbelimitedtothemodernfeministmovementanditsdescendants.Thosehistoriansusethelabel"protofeminist"todescribeearliermovements.
Themodernwesternfeministmovementisdividedintothree"waves".Eachisdescribedasdealingwithdifferentaspectsofthesamefeministissues.Thefirstwavereferstothemovementofthe19ththroughearly20thcenturies,whichdealtmainlywithsuffrage,workingconditionsandeducationalrightsforwomenandgirls.Thesecondwave(1960s-1980s)dealtwiththeinequalityoflaws,aswellasculturalinequalitiesandtheroleofwomeninsociety.Thethirdwaveoffeminism(late1980s-earlyfirstdecadeofthe21stcentury),isseenasbothacontinuationofthesecondwaveandaresponsetotheperceivedfailures.
Theeffortsandaccomplishmentsofthesewomenandorganizationsthroughoutthewomen'smovementinspiredmanyauthorsofthattimetowriteabouttheirpersonalexperienceswithfeminism.JoFreemanandSaraEvansweretwosuchauthors.Bothwomenparticipatedinthemovementandwroteabouttheirfirsthandknowledgeoffeminism.Freeman,Americanfeministandwriter,wroteseveralfeministarticlesonissuessuchassocialmovements,politicalparties,publicpolicytowardwomenandmanyotherimportantpiecesaboutwomen.Evanswroteherexperiencesinbookssuchas"TheRootsofWomen'sLiberationintheCivilRightMovementandtheNewLeft"and"BornforLiberty".Herworksfocusedmoreonyoungwomenactivistsrecognizingthatthe"personalispolitical"aswellasshowinghowthesewomenuseddiscussionsessionstoexpandunderstandingofthesocialrootsofpersonalproblemsandworkedtowardsdevelopingdifferentpracticestoaddressthoseissues.
Partofwhatmadefeminismsosuccessfulwasthewaywomenindifferentsituationsdevelopedtheirownvariantsandorganizedforthegoalsmostimportanttothem.Allwomen-NativeAmericanwomen,workingclasswomen,Jewishwomen,Catholicwomen,sexworkers,andwomenwithdisabilities-describedwhatgenderequalitywouldmeanforthemandworkedtogethertoachieveit.
2.3Abstractofthiswork
Inthecontentionofthebestpictureofthe67thOscarAwardin1995,filmHavegotsixGrandPrizes,suchasthebestpicture,thebestactor,thebestachievementindirecting,adaptingdrama,thebestachievementinfilmeditingandthebestvisualeffect,etc.ThefilmwaspassedtoanintellectualdisturbancepersoncreatesinthedescriptionoflifewhichhasreflectedeveryaspectofU.S.A.'slife,importantincidentsofsocialpoliticallife,representingtthesedecadesfromoneuniqueangle.FilmisadaptedfromWinston·Groom’snovelofthesamename.Onlytheoriginalworkiswithasatiricflavor,butthefilmmodifiesandbeautifiesthestory.Ithasabandonedtheabsurdityoftheoriginalworkandrevealedthatsatiricalmeaning,hasaddedakindoftenderfeelingforthefilm.Thisundoubtedlymakesthefilmsuitaudienceandjudgingpanel'stasteevenmore,buthassacrificedthestrugglingspiritoftherebeloftheoriginalwork,makingthefilmbecomeonekindandidealizedethicalsymbol.

AsForrestGumpsitsatabusstop,hebeginstellinghislifestorytostrangersnearby.Onhisfirstdayofschool,ForrestmeetsagirlnamedJennyCurran,whoheimmediatelyfallsinlovewithandwhoselifeisfollowedparalleltohis.Despitehisbelowaverageintelligencequotient(IQ),hisabilitytorunveryfastgetshimintotheUniversityofAlabamaonafootballscholarship.HeultimatelybecomesanAllAmericanstarandmeetsPresidentJohnF.Kennedy.WhileattendingcollegehewitnessesGeorgeWallace'sattempttopreventintegrationattheschool.
Aftergraduation,Forrestenlistsinthearmy.HemakesfriendswithBenjaminBufordBlue,nicknamedBubba,whoconvinceshimtobehispartnerintheshrimpingbusinesswhentheVietnamWarisover.HealsomeetsJennyagain,whoisnowpartofthecounterculturemovementandworkingasastripper.In1967,heandBubbaaresenttoVietnam,andafterseveralmonthsofpatrollingwiththe9thInfantryDivision,theirplatoonisambushed.Forrestisshotinthebuttocksbutrescuesmanyofthemeninhisunit,althoughBubbaisfatallywoundedanddies.Lt.DanTaylor,theplatoon'scommandingofficer,isalsoseriouslywoundedandlosesbothlegs.HechastisesForrestforsavinghim,insistingthathewouldratherhavediedhonorablyonthebattlefieldthanbecomeacripple.ForForrest'sactions,heisawardedtheMedalofHonorbyPresidentLyndonB.Johnson.WhileinWashington,hebecomessweptupinananti-warrally.UnexpectedlyheagainmeetsJenny.TheyspendtheeveningwalkingaroundWashington,butwhenthemorningcomessheleaveswithherabusiveboyfriend.
Whilstinhospital,Forrestdiscoveredanuncannyabilityforpingpong.HebeginsplayingfortheU.S.Armyteam,eventuallycompetingagainstChineseteamsonagoodwilltour,sometimesreferredtoasPingPongDiplomacy.HegoestotheWhiteHouseforathirdtimetomeetPresidentRichardNixonwhoprovideshimaroomattheWatergatehotel.Whilethere,Forrestwitnessesaburglaryandcallssecurity,inadvertentlyexposingtheWatergatescandal.HealsogoesontheDickCavettShowinNewYorkCityandtalkswithJohnLennon,presumablyinspiringthesong"Imagine".Whenleaving,hemeetsLt.Dan,nowanembittereddrunklivingonwelfare.
Forrestisdischarged,andusesmoneyfromanendorsementforpingpongpaddlestobuyashrimpingboat,fulfillinghiswartimepromisetoBubba.Later,Lt.Danjoinshimasfirstmate.Theyinitiallyhavelittlesuccess,butafterHurricaneCarmenhitstheGulfStates,theirboatistheonlyonetosurvive.BusinessnowboomsandForrestbuysanentirefleetofshrimpingboats;theBubbaGumpShrimpCompanybecomesahouseholdname.Asaresult,Forrestgainsalotofmoney;hedonatesmuchofthistothelocalGospelChurch,andgivesBubba'sfamilyashareoftheprofits.HeleavesthecompanyinthehandsofLt.Dan,whoinvestsaportionoftheirwealthinsharesfromApple.ThisprovidesForrestwithevenmoremoneywhilstLt.Dan,afterhavinghadanepiphanyontheboat,forgivesForrestandthankshimforsavinghislife.Forrestreturnshomewhenhismotherfallsillandshediessoonafterward.
In1976,JennyreturnstovisitForrest,andheeventuallyproposestoher.Althoughshedeclinesshetellshimthatshedoeslovehim.Theysleeptogetherbutsheleavesthenextday.Onawhim,Forrestelectstogoforarunandsimplydecidesnottostop.Overthenextthreeyears,twomonths,fourteendaysandsixteenhours,herunscoasttocoastacrossthecountryseveraltimes,gatheringasmallfollowing.RealizingthathehadbeenrunningtotryandmakesenseofhisfeelingsforJennyandthedeathsofhismotherandBubba,heabruptlystopsandreturnshome.
