Itiswell-knownthatlearningasecondlanguageisnevereasy,and,generally
speaking,theolderoneiswhenoneattemptsanewlanguage,themoredifficultit
becomes.Thisisatleastpartlyduetowhatisknownaslanguageinterference,meaning
thatthelinguisticpatternsofourfirstlanguageinterferewiththoseofthesecond
becausenotwolanguageshaveexactlythesamesoundsandgrammaticalstructures.The
Englishlanguagehasaverylargevocabularybecauseithasincorporatedwordsfrom
manyotherlanguagesoverthecenturies.Thisisnowheremoreapparentthaninitscolor
words.Forexample,therearemanywordsthatexpressthecolor“purple”,describing
itsdifferentshadesandhues:

linguisticgenderdifferenceamongnativespeakersofEnglishisthelikelihoodofwomen
usingthesecolortermstodifferentiatebetweenshadesofpurple,whereas,menwill
besatisfiedwiththeoneword“purple”.Thisistrueofothercolorwordstoo.
Basingonwhatmentionedabove,whenlearningalanguage,wesometimesneedtopay
attentiontowhichsexuseswhichwords,particularlywhenwereachanadvancedstage
whereweareaddingmanynewwordstoourvocabularyandwanttousethemaccurately.
