●Haveahighschooldiplomaorequivalent,thoughmanyfiredepartmentsnowrequireacollegeeducation.

●Bephysicallyfit.

●Haveacleancriminalrecord.

●Havecorrected20/20vision.

Firefightingisahighlycompetitivefield.Thousandsofapplicantsapplyeveryyearacrossthecountry,butmostarerejected.Manydepartmentshireeverytwoyears,andtypicallygivestaffpositionstoabout30applicantsatatime.Whilesomefiredepartmentsonlyrequireapplicantstoholdahighschooldiploma,manylookforapplicantswithtwoyearsofcollegecreditfromanaccreditedcollegeoruniversity.Firefightingissocompetitive,infact,thatmanyapplicantsobtainEMTcertificationbeforeapplyingtobeafirefighter,makingthemmoredesirabletodepartmentsthatarehiring.Today,moreapplicantsthaneverhavefour-yeardegreesinfirescienceorarela
