JAPANESEANDAMERICANCLASSROOMS

Ithasbeenabout10dayssinceIcametotheUSA.ThisismyfirsttimetocometotheUSA,soatthebeginningIhadnoideaabouteverythingsurroundingme,especially,abouthowmystudieswouldbegoing.Butactually,astimegoesbyIhavegottentoknowhowanAmericanUniversityis.So,today,IwouldliketowriteaboutthedifferencesbetweenAmericanandJapaneseUniversities.

First,IhavenoticedadifferencebetweenanAmericanUniversityandaJapaneseUniversityintermsofthestyleofalesson.InJapan,studentsattendingaclassnevertalktotheprofessorduringthelecture,eveniftheyhaveaquestionaboutthethingthattheprofessoristalkingabout.Theyjustlistentothelecture,andtheprofessorkeepsspeaking.Evenwhentheprofessoraskssomethingtothestudents,nobodyanswersunlesstheprofessorcallshisorhername.Andeveniftheprofessorpointsatsomeoneandcallsaname,sometimesthepersonjustsays,"Idon'tknow,"becausetheydonothavemuchconfidenceaboutwhethertheansweristrueorreasonableandtheyareafraidofmakingmistakes.

Incontrast,intheUSA,studentsattendingaclassoftentalktotheprofessorduringthelecturewhenevertheyhaveaquestionortheyhaveanopinion.So,aprofessorintheUSAsometimeshastostopthelecturetotalkaboutorexplainthethingaskedbyastudentevenduringthelecture.Whentheprofessoraskssomethingtothestudents,someoneanswersthequestionvoluntarily,andsomeoneelsewouldanswerthequestionifhisorheranswerisdifferentfromthefirstperson.AtthattimeIthinkthestudentsdon'tworryaboutwhethertheiranswersarerightornot,buttheyanswerbecausesomethingoccurstothem.

Secondly,IhavenoticedadifferencebetweenAmericanandJapaneseclassroomsintermsoftherelationshipbetweenteachersandstudents.InJapan,aprofessorisconsideredtobeapersonwhoteachesaparticularsubject.So,ateacherjustteacheshisorherprofessionalthingtothestudentsandnevertalksaboutprivatethingstothestudents,evenoutsideofclass.Wehavetoputahugedistancebetweenourselvesandtheteachers,andhavetocallthemProfessorSato,forexample.Theprofessorscallusalsobyourlastnames,withMr.orMiss.(Someprofessorscallthestudents'lastnameswithoutMr.orMiss.)So,wenevertalkaboutprivatematterswiththem.Inthiscase,theprivatemattersincludedailystuff,suchasourfailureinacourseorourpart-timejob,orwhateverisbeingusedindailyconversation.Incontrast,inanAmericanuniversityaprofessordoesteach,ofcourse,theirprofessionalsubjects,buttheytendtotalkabouttheirpersonalmatterstosomeextent,eveninlessons.Ihaveheardfromsomeprofessorsabouthowtheirhusbandorwifeisandalsoabouttheirdailyaffairs.Outsidetheclass,thestudentstalktotheirprofessorsabouttheirlives,forexample,whentheymeetinthecafeteriaorsnackbar.Imeantheyhaveadailyconversationwitheachother.Somestudentscalltheirprofessorsbytheirfirstnamesiftheprofessordoesnotmind,andtheprofessorsalwayscallthestudentsbytheirfirstnames,evenintheclasses.

Thirdly,Ihavenoticedadifferenceinregardtotheclassroommannersofboththestudentsandteachers.InaclassroomofauniversityinJapan,studentshavetobeformaltoshowrespecttoateacher.Drinkingasoftdrinkorchewinggumduringalessonisconsideredtobebadmanners.Iwouldsayastudentwhohashisorherfeetonachairnearbywouldbetoldtoleavetheclass.Incontrast,Americanstudentsdothethingsmentionedabove,butunlesstheyinterruptalecture,theyarenotconsideredtobebad.AsforthebehaviorofteachersinJapan,theyalwaysstandupduringtheirlecturesandneversitdown.Incontrast,intheUSA,theysitdownonachairorevenonadeskinthefrontofaclassroomduringlessons,althoughtheysometimesstandup.

Lastly,IhavenoticedadifferencebetweenAmericanUniversitiesandJapaneseUniversitiesintermsofthevolumeofhomeworkorpreparationforthenextlesson.InJapan,fewteachersrequestthatstudentsprepareforthenextlessonordohomework.Eveniftheydo,wedonot,sincewedonotprovokeconversationandtheteachercannotfindoutifwehavedoneitornot.Incontrast,inanAmericanUniversity,thestudentsarerequiredtostudyhardtoprepareforthenextlessonsinordertodiscussparticularthingswhenthetimecomes.Andalso,teachersoftenaskthestudentstoreadcertainbooksortowritereportsdueonacertainday.Iwouldsaythesearehomework.Ifthestudentsignorethem,itiseasilyfoundoutthattheyarelazyorunmotivated,andasaresultofthattheywouldgetbadscores.

IamthinkingaboutthesekindsofdifferencesnotbecauseIamtryingtojudgewhichisbetter,butbecauseIhavefeltthedifferencesbyfacingthetwoofthem.Iwouldsaythedifferencescomefromtheculturaldifferences,notjustfromthedifferencesintheireducationalsystems.(911词)

PeopleliveinThailandhavedifferentcultureandfoodfromAmericanpeopleoranothercountry.Firstofall,wehaveagreatrespectolderpeopleandparents.Welistentoourparentsandolderpeople.Whenwegotoschoolinthemorning,webowgoodbytoourparentsandwecomebackwedothatagain.Webowwhenwemeetolderpeople.Wenevershakehandsorkissotherpeople.Closefriendsdotouchoneanotherwhenspeaking.Superiorsmayalsotouchsubordinatestoshowkindnessorconcerns.InThailand,itiscommontoseefriendsofsamesexholdhands.Itindicatesclosefriendshipandnothingsexualinnature.Second,whenwearespeakingtosomeone,itisimportancetomakeeyecontact,physicalcontact,gestures,facialexpressions.Itisquiteacceptabletogesticulatewithhandswhilespeaking.However,itisconsideredbadformtopointanindexfingeratthepersonyouspeakto.Feetmustnotbeusedtogesticulateorpoint,sincetheyareconsidered"low."Third,foodisdifferent.Thaicookingreflectedthecharacteristicsofawaterbornelifestyle.Aquaticanimals,plantsandherbsweremajoringredients.Thaicookingmethodswerestewingandbaking,orgrilling.Thaimealisservedallatonce,permittingdinerstoenjoycomplementarycombinationsofdifferenttastes.AproperThaimealshouldconsistofasoup,acurrydishwithcondiments,adipwithaccompanyingfishandvegetables.Aspicedsaladmayreplacethecurrydish.Thesoupcanalsobespicy,butthecurryshouldbereplacedbynonspiceditems.Thaimealisaharmoniousblendofthespicy,thesubtle,thesweetandsour,andismeanttobeequallysatisfyingtoeye,nose,andpalate.InThailand,weeatricewithfoodandourfamilyeatseverymealtogether.Wedonoteatfastfoodorgoouttoeatveryoften.Inaddition,Thaipeoplearefunlovinginnature.Theyarelovehavingfun.Wehavedifferentculture,butwearefriendlytoeverybody.(343词)
