Astronomershavemeasuredtheabundanceofheliumthroughoutourgalaxyandinothergalaxiesaswell.HeliumhasbeenfoundInoldstars,inrelativelyyoungones,ininterstellargas,andinthedistantobjectsknownasquasars.Heliumnucleihavealsobeenfoundtobeconstituentsofcosmicraysthatfallontheearth(cosmic"rays"arenotreallyaformofradiation;theyconsistofrapidlymovingparticlesofnumerousdifferentkinds).Itdoesn'tseemtomakeverymuchdifferencewheretheheliumisfound.Itsrelativeabundanceneverseemstovarymuch.Insomeplaces,theremaybeslightlymoreofit;Inothers,slightlyless,buttheratioofheliumtohydrogennucleialwaysremainsaboutthesame.
