  OnthenorthbankofBaotuquanspringsisagroupofancientbuildings,usuallyreferredtoasthreepalaces.ThefrontonewithtwostoriesandthreehallsiscalledLuoyuanHall,andwasbuiltduringNorthTheSongDynasty.Thebuildingisnotedforitsextendingeavesandpatinaflavor.OnthecolumnsarecarvedfamouslinesbyZhaomengfu,awriteroftheYuanDynasty.Theyread:

"云雾润蒸华不注,波涛声震大明湖",whichmean"Thebeautyisintensifiedwithfoggysteamsandmoistair;thebillowisechoedfarfromDamingLake."Thehandwritingisvigorousandfirm,thelinesvividandlifelike,formingaharmoniouspicturewiththerealpresentwaterworldinview.TheothertwopalacesarenamedrespectivelyasJiang'eTempleandEyingTemple,whichwerebuiltinhonorofthetwoimperialconcubinesofEmperorShun.Onthewallssurroundingthepalacesareinlaidoverthirtystoneinscriptions,onwhicharepoemsandverseswrittenbycelebritiesofdifferentdynasties.Whatisworthmentioningisthetwinimperialmonuments,onwhichrecordepigraphsandpoemsbyEmperorKangxiwhovisitedherethreetimesandbyQianlongwhowasheretwice.ThemonumentswellillustratetheeminenceofBaotuquansprings.

 

  TothesouthofBaotuquanspringsistheWhiteSnowBuildingatShiwanquanspring.ItwassetupinmemoryofLiPanlong,awriterandscholarofTheQingDynasty.Itwasburntdowninafireandwasrebuiltin1996togetherwithanoperastage.Hereperennialoperasandplaysareperformed,makingitaperformancecenterwellknownnotonlyinChinabutalsointheworld.SoutheastofBaotuquanspringsisacourtyardcalledCangyuanGarden,whereitissaidthatLiPanlongwasstudying.Thethreehallsandtwocourtsinthegardenareallconnectedbytwistingopencorridors.Therearerareflowers,oddtrees,greenpinetreesandqueerrockeriesinthegarden.In1987,amemorialwassetuphereforWangXuetao,afamousmodernpainterofflowersandbirds.MorethantwohundredpiecesofChinesepaintingarehereonexhibitionallyearround.

 

  OutofCangyuanGarden,acrosstheFengxiIslandbridge,comesinviewapoolofclearspringwatergushingfromundergroundlikeamirror.Thisisoneofthe72wellknownspringscalledShuyuquanspring.Shadywillowsaround,limpidwaterdowntothevisiblebottom,gurglingwateragainstrocksasifwashingthejade,thejade-likepoolliesinharmoniouscharmwithLiuxuspring,Huanghuaspring,andPaniuspring.BythesideofLiuxuspringandwestofShuyuspringaretwostone-laidpondsrespectivelycalledOldGoldThreadspringandColdThreadspring.Inthem,waterveinsarecausedbywavesofwaterfromdifferentdirection.Itshineslikegoldthreadonasunnyday.Thustheygotthenames.Sincetheshiningthreadsrequirecertainsunlightandwaterconditionstorevealtheirwonder,onlythoseluckyvisitorscanenjoythescene.TothenorthofBaotuquansprings,aredarkgreenpinesandcypresses,bloomingflowersandshadylawns,treesofbewilderingrocks.OnecanseeMapaoquanspringsjustontherocks.Hiddenundertreeshadesouthoftherockwork,thereisafour-meterhighTaihustone,loftyandpointing,veinsstandingout,shapedlikeaturtle.ThisisthetreasurecollectedasthenumberonestoneinJinanbyZhangYanghao,awell-knownprosewriteroftheYuanDynasty.SituatedonthenorthbankofShuyuquanspringisthememorialhallofLiQingzhao,awomanpoetoftheSongDynasty.ThistraditionalChinesebuildinghasaquietandunadornedcourtyardwithstreams,apavilion,JadeGreenRoom,roundcorridors,standingrocksinbambooshade.OnthefronttabletandtwocolumnsofthehallarecarvedrespectivelywithlinesinpraiseofthewomanpoetwrittenbyGuoMoruo,aneminentcontemporarywriterinChina.Thehorizontallinereads:

"Apoetofgenerations."Theverticalmeans:

"FromDamingLaketoBaotuquanspringsonefindstheformerresidenceinthewillowshade.IntheShuyujipoemcollectionandJinshiluquotationsonetracesthecharmofthepoet."Inthehall,apartfromexhibitedworksandstatueofLiQingzhao,therearecomments,essays,works,calligraphy,paintingsonthelifeandworksofthiswomanpoetbycelebritiesofdifferenttimesanddynasties.WestofLiQingzhaoMemorialHallisacourtyardwithroomsconnectedbycorridorsandsurroundedonthreesidesbygurglingstreams.ThisistheShangzhiCollegeorShangzhiSchoolforfosteringscholarsforimperialexaminations,whichwassetupbyDingBaozhen,governorintheninthyearofEmperorTongzhi.

 

  AsagardeninsideagardenneighboringtheparktothewestisthequietscenicWanzhuGarden(gardenofthousandsofbambootrees),whichconsistsof13differentcourtyardsonalandareaof12,000squaremeters.Asaprivategardenofuniquefeatures,therearesuchwell-knowngushingspringsasWangshuiquan,Baiyunquan,andDonggaoquanalongwithrockeriesandplants.TheconstructionofthegardentookmanyyearsfromYuanDynastyuntilnow.SomeofitsownersareYinShizhan,PrimeMinisteroftheQingDynasty,WangPing,apoetoftheQingDynastyandwarlordZhangHuaizhiduringtheCivilWarperiod.Itwasofficiallyopentothepublicin1984.TheLiKuchanMemorialwassetupherein1986tostoreandexhibitmasterpiecesofthisgreatChinesepainter.AsthelargestexhibitionofChinesepaintingsandcalligraphyworks,thereareover200paintingsandculturaltreasuresin18exhibitionhalls.Alsoputonshowallyearroundinthegardenareover200piecesofancientfurnitureandculturalrelicsoftheMingandQingDynasties.FollowingthepatternofthetraditionalChinesenorthernresidencesofsquarecourtyardwithhousesonfoursides,thisgardenabsorbscharacteristicsofclassicgardensinSouthChina.Therearetwistingcorridorsconnectingallcourtyardssurroundedbydottedstoriedhouses,halls,andpavilions.Alsoboastingasthreeartisticextremesarethestone,woodandbrickcarvingsinthegarden,whichislistedintoAnIllustratedHandbookofTraditionalChineseFolkResidencein1993.WanzhuGardenisnodoubtapreciousculturalrelicwhetherintermsofgardeningartorhistoricculturaltreasure.
