Letussuppose,gentlereader,thatitisnowtheyearoftheworldthreethousandeighthundredandthirty,andletus,forafewminutes,imagineourselvesatthatmostgrotesquehabitationofman,theremarkablecityofAntioch.Tobesuretherewere,inSyriaandothercountries,sixteencitiesofthatappellation,besidestheonetowhichImoreparticularlyallude.ButoursisthatwhichwentbythenameofAntiochiaEpidaphne,fromitsvicinitytothelittlevillageofDaphne,wherestoodatempletothatdivinity.Itwasbuilt(althoughaboutthismatterthereissomedispute)bySeleucusNicanor,thefirstkingofthecountryafterAlexandertheGreat,inmemoryofhisfatherAntiochus,andbecameimmediatelytheresidenceoftheSyrianmonarchy.IntheflourishingtimesoftheRomanEmpire,itwastheordinarystationoftheprefectoftheeasternprovinces;andmanyoftheemperorsofthequeencity(amongwhommaybementioned,especially,VerusandValens)spentherethegreaterpartoftheirtime.ButIperceivewehavearrivedatthecityitself.Letusascendthisbattlement,andthrowoureyesuponthetownandneighboringcountry.
