FUJINON'SLARGEFORMATLENSES

RECTAR
SomehistorianssuggestthatWorldWarIIreallystartedwhenGermanyinvadedtheSovietUniononJune22,1941.Othersconsiderthatitactuallystartedtenyearsearlier,in1931,whenJapaninvadedManchuria. ThatwaseightyearsbeforeGermanyinvadedPolandandEngland&Francedeclaredwar,andtenyearsbeforeJapanattackedtheUSAatPearlHarborandWakeIsland. AndWWIIdidn'tendwhenHitlercommittedsuicide,asmanythink.Itdidn'tenduntilJapansurrendered--withconditions--onSeptember2,1945. AfewsaythatWWIIwasn'tcompletelyoveruntil thelastJapanesesoldierssurrenderedin1974!
Anyway,inthemidstoftheWar,in1938,theFujiFilmCompanysawpotentialintheworldofoptics,andproducedlensesandcamerasneededbythemilitary. AftertheWar,theyslowlyrebuiltandstartedmakinglensesforvarious,developing,civilian,photographiccompaniesandbusinesses. MostwereforcameraswithformatsthathadbeencommoninJapanbeforethewar. Fujinamedtheirlenses"Rectar"--aftermanywell-knownGermanlensesbySteinheil--whichtheuninformedcalled"Rectsr"（becausethe"a"kinda,sorta,lookedlikean"s"）,andtheignorantcall"Rectal"（inanattempttobelittletheirquality）.Someevenclaimedthattheselenseswerefilledwithwater,insteadofglass--nokidding!
Undoubtedly,theseFujilensesweremodeledafterGerman,Tessar-typelensesthatwerecommoninJapanbeforetheWar. TherewereatleastfourofFuji'sRectarlensesthatweremadeforwhatwenowadaysrefertoas"largeformat". TheearlyRectarlensesweremadewithuncoatedglass,butitispossiblethatallRectarlenseswereuncoated. Afterall,thefirst,coated,JapaneselensesdidnotappearuntilMinoltaproducedthemin1947. ItmightbethatwhenFujiaddedcoatingtotheirlensesthattheychangedthenametoFujinar（seebelow）. Itispossiblethattherewereotherfocallengthsthanthoselistedhere,butnottoolikely.TheRectarnamewasalsousedonFuji'searlyenlargerandcameralenses. IfyoucanfindaRectar,youownapieceofhistory.

AnevolutionaryoutgrowthoftheRectarseries,theFujinarseriesoflenseswereFuji'ssecondseriesoflargeformatlenses. Theychangedthenameoftheirlensesfrom"Rectar"to"Fujinar"in1954. Thisearlyseriesoffersatleastfourlensesforlargeformatusers--from180mmto300mm. Allaresingle-coatedTessardesigns（fourelementsinthreegroups）withwideaperturesoff4.5. Allcameasin-barrellenseswithoutshutters. Theonlyprobabledifferencebetweentheselensesandtheirpredecessors--besidesthename--isthelenscoating. TheselenseslivedonasthelaterFujinonin-barrelTessarlenses（seebelow）. FujiusedtheFujinarnameonmanyofitsenlarging,mediumformat,35mmandsmallerformatcameralenses.

Plusnotallofthelensesofthiseraaremarked"SC"eventhoughallofthemweresinglecoated. Another"idea"isthatthe"SC"means"SoftCoated",butthatisevensilliersincetheywerenotdesignedassoft-focuslenses.Abetterideawouldbe"Shuttered-Copal"or"Synchro-Copal".
