thankyoudeandavisforthewonderfulintroduction,andibringwarmwishesfrommyuniversitytothe2005graduates,theirfamiliesandguests,andtothefacultyandadministrationofthecollegeofoptometry.iamespeciallypleasedtojoinuniversityofmissourisystemcurator,dr.anneream,deanlarrydavisandthefacultytocelebratethismostimportanteventinthelifeofanoptometrist,thesuddenandabruptchangefromprofessionalstudenttodoctor.

graduates,itisaveryhighorderprivilegeanddistincthonorformetoaddressyoutoday,andiamhumbledbyyourcollectiveaccomplishmentsasstudents,ascliniciansandascitizens.

the28womenand16menwhoaremembersoftheclassof2005comefromthirteen(13)states.youjoinedthisfineuniversityandcollegefouryearsagoaseagerstudentswithstrongacademicbackgroundsandcollegialspirits.icheckedwiththedeanandafewmembersofyourclassearliertodayandiamhappytoreportthatyourspiritshavenotbeenbroken,noryourintellectualcuriositydiminished.

onecouldratetheapproximately1,200membersoftheoptometryclassof2005acrossthisnationasthebestwehavegraduated,indeedwiththemanychangesinourpracticingprofessionandconsequentlyinthepreparatorycurriculumonecanfeelquitesafeinmakingsuchastatementatthisand,hopefully,subsequentcommencements.

inadditiontotheseaccolades,oneshouldrealizethatonly1/100thof1percentoftheworld’spopulationachievesthedoctorallevelofeducation.therefore,fromaglobalperspective,thisistrulyaremarkableachievement.

ireadrecentlythatbrevity,humorandcelebrityareimportantingraduationspeeches.ificandooneoutofthree,ifeelihaveaccomplishedmygoal.

iwanttotellyouastoryandshareasimplemessagewithyou.

mrs.brownwasalongtimepatientofmineattheuniversityeyeinstitute.wehadworkedthroughsystemicandeyediseasesandrelatedconditionsoverabout8years.shewasaregular,annualpatientwhofeltcomfortableaboutcallingmewhenshehadquestionsandsharingwithmeissuesrelatedtoherhealthcareneeds.wehaddealtwithopenangleglaucoma,cataractsurgery,diabetes,hypertensionandfrequentchangesinherrefractiveerror.

about4yearsagoireceivedoneofthoseregularphonecallsbutthistimetherewassadnessinhervoice.remember,iwastheonepersonofonlyafewwithwhomshesharedherhealthandvisionproblemsandsometimespersonalproblems.iwas“hereyedoctor”andwehadlongagopassedthecrossculturalcommunicationbarrier.

aswetalked,mrs.brownbegantocryasshesharedthefactthatherhealthinsuranceandsubsequentmedicarechangeswouldnolongerpayforhervisitsnorthediagnosticandtherapeuticservicesthatiprescribed.althoughcommonplacetoday,thesesuddenandoftentraumaticchangesinmedicalserviceprovidersdisregardtheimportanceoftrust,understandingandrespectdevelopedovertimebetweenpatientanddoctor.thisscenariohappensonlytoooftenwherethisimportantrelationshipbetweendoctorandpatientisstrainedandoftenseveredduetoimpersonalandexternalfactors.

thestoryofmrs.brownhasbeenrepeatedtensofthousandsoftimesinoptometry,medicine,dentistry,osteopathy,podiatry,pharmacy,etc.formany,thedoctor-patientrelationshiphasbeenreplacedwithimpersonalthirdpartyshepherdingofpatientsfromprovidertoprovider.manyofyouhaveexperiencedthisdisruptioninyourhealthcare.

honesty,trust,compassion,fairness,patience,understanding,respect,dignity,confidentiality,goodcitizenship,charityandbeneficencearemostworthytraitsforallcitizens,buttheyaremandatorytraitsforthoseofuswhooccupypositionsofhighresponsibilityforhumanandhealthservices.thisisnotacasewhere80%oreven90%ofthoseattributesisacceptable—it’s100%—muchliketake-offsandlandingsandactionpotentials,it’sallornone.

mostpersonshaveatinctureofeachofthesetraits,butforthehealthcareprovideritisanimperativetohavealargetherapeuticandpreventivedose.

ifonesamplespatientsregardingthetraitsofthe“bestdoctors”theyknoworhaveexperienced,eachofthepreviouslynotedvirtuescanbefound.patientswantandexpecttheirdoctorstobeprofessionallyvirtuousandtobemodelcitizens.

youwillsoontakethe“optometricoath”whichallowsyoutostatebeforefamily,friends,colleaguesandyourfaculty,yourethicalandprofessionalconvictions.

inthe4thcenturyb.c.,thegreekphysicianhippocrates,the“fatherofmedicine,”laidoutcommonsenseethicalprincipleswhichareknowntoallofusinthehealthprofessions.theydealwithrespect,fairness,justice,confidentiality,honestyandqualityofcare.“thehippocraticoath.”

thereisonesomewhatlesserknowncomponentofthehippocraticoath;itis“respectforyourteachers.”simplystated,hippocrateswroteandpledged:

foryourdistinguishedandpatientfacultymemberswhohaveplayedrolesasteacher,mentorandcounselorinyourcareer,continuethisrelationshipandtrustandrespectthemandtheinstitutionwhichhasembracedyouforfouryears.

anothertruismfromtheamericanfrontier:

“whenyougettowhereyouaregoin’,thefirstthingtodoistakecareofthehorseyourodeinon.”

therearefewthingsinhighereducationthatreachthelevelofprideandsatisfactionforafacultymemberthantoshareone’sknowledge,skillandexperiencewithotherswhowillgoforthandpractice(andteachothers).
