thankyoudeandavisforthewonderfulintroduction,andibringwarmwishesfrommyuniversitytothe2005graduates,theirfamiliesandguests,andtothefacultyandadministrationofthecollegeofoptometry.iamespeciallypleasedtojoinuniversityofmissourisystemcurator,dr.anneream,deanlarrydavisandthefacultytocelebratethismostimportanteventinthelifeofanoptometrist,thesuddenandabruptchangefromprofessionalstudenttodoctor.
graduates,itisaveryhighorderprivilegeanddistincthonorformetoaddressyoutoday,andiamhumbledbyyourcollectiveaccomplishmentsasstudents,ascliniciansandascitizens.
the28womenand16menwhoaremembersoftheclassof2005comefromthirteen(13)states.youjoinedthisfineuniversityandcollegefouryearsagoaseagerstudentswithstrongacademicbackgroundsandcollegialspirits.icheckedwiththedeanandafewmembersofyourclassearliertodayandiamhappytoreportthatyourspiritshavenotbeenbroken,noryourintellectualcuriositydiminished.
onecouldratetheapproximately1,200membersoftheoptometryclassof2005acrossthisnationasthebestwehavegraduated,indeedwiththemanychangesinourpracticingprofessionandconsequentlyinthepreparatorycurriculumonecanfeelquitesafeinmakingsuchastatementatthisand,hopefully,subsequentcommencements.
inadditiontotheseaccolades,oneshouldrealizethatonly1/100thof1percentoftheworld’spopulationachievesthedoctorallevelofeducation.therefore,fromaglobalperspective,thisistrulyaremarkableachievement.
ireadrecentlythatbrevity,humorandcelebrityareimportantingraduationspeeches.ificandooneoutofthree,ifeelihaveaccomplishedmygoal.

mrs.brownwasalongtimepatientofmineattheuniversityeyeinstitute.wehadworkedthroughsystemicandeyediseasesandrelatedconditionsoverabout8years.shewasaregular,annualpatientwhofeltcomfortableaboutcallingmewhenshehadquestionsandsharingwithmeissuesrelatedtoherhealthcareneeds.wehaddealtwithopenangleglaucoma,cataractsurgery,diabetes,hypertensionandfrequentchangesinherrefractiveerror.
about4yearsagoireceivedoneofthoseregularphonecallsbutthistimetherewassadnessinhervoice.remember,iwastheonepersonofonlyafewwithwhomshesharedherhealthandvisionproblemsandsometimespersonalproblems.iwas“hereyedoctor”andwehadlongagopassedthecrossculturalcommunicationbarrier.
aswetalked,mrs.brownbegantocryasshesharedthefactthatherhealthinsuranceandsubsequentmedicarechangeswouldnolongerpayforhervisitsnorthediagnosticandtherapeuticservicesthatiprescribed.althoughcommonplacetoday,thesesuddenandoftentraumaticchangesinmedicalserviceprovidersdisregardtheimportanceoftrust,understandingandrespectdevelopedovertimebetweenpatientanddoctor.thisscenariohappensonlytoooftenwherethisimportantrelationshipbetweendoctorandpatientisstrainedandoftenseveredduetoimpersonalandexternalfactors.
