Whenhediedin1896,heleftover3millionpoundstobespentsettingupfiveprizeseachyear.Theseprizesweretobegiventopeoplewhohadmadeoutstandingcontributionstopeace,toscience,andtoliterature.Originallytherewerefiverewards:
