Anewresearch,presentedonMonday,suggeststhatparentswhogodownslideswiththeirkidsareactuallymakingslidesevenriskierfortheirlittleones.

LedbyDr.CharlesJennissen,aprofessorattheUniversityofIowa,theresearchfoundthatplacingchildren(especiallyinfantsandtoddlers蹒跚学步的小孩)onadultlapsincreasestheriskofinjurytotheirlowerlegs,including brokenbones.

SoJennissenandhiscolleaguesfoundthatabout350,000childrenundertheageofsixwereinjuredonslidesintheU.S.from2002to2015.Injuriesweremostcommonamongkidsfrom12-23monthsofage,andthemostcommoninjurywaslowerlegfractures(骨折).

Theresearchersfoundthat94percentof600casesincludelowerleginjuries.Thisisimportant,becausethat'snothowakidfallingoffaslidealonewouldusuallygethurt.Thefactthatsomanykidsaregettinglowerleginjuries—andthatthoseinjuriesseemtogetlesscommonaskidsgetolder—suggestssomethingelseisatplay.

Jennissenthinksthatwhenchildrenareslidingalone,theyaren’tgoingfastenoughorcarryingenoughbodyweighttohurtthemselves.Whenthey’resittingonanadult’slapandtheirfootgetscaught,theyhavetheaddedmomentumofan adultbody.

"Wethinkalotoftheselowerextremityinjuriesarebecausethey'reonthelap,"saysJennissen."Wedon'tknowthatforsure,becausenoparentssaythat.Butfrommyexperience,andthedatathatsuggestsit,wethinkalmostallofthesearekidsareonthelap."
