andhenceitisthattheyarepopularlyaccusedofpretenseandhypocrisy,not,Irepeat,fromtheirownfault,butbecausetheirprofessorsandtheiradmirerspersistintakingthemforwhattheyarenot,andareofficiousinarrogatingforthemapraisetowhichtheyhavenothegraniterockwithrazors,ormoorthevesselwithathreadofsilk,thenmayyouhopewithsuchkeenanddelicateinstrumentsashumanknowledgeandhumanreasontocontendagainstthosegiants,

Passage2.“Packing”aPerson

Aperson,likeacommodity,needsgoingtoofarisabsolutelylittleexaggeration,however,doesnoharmwhenitshowstheperson'

Passage3.ThreePassionsIHaveLivedfor

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:

thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofpassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourseoveradeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofhavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy—ecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestofmylifeforafewhoursforthishavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness—thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelesshavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat—atlast—IhaveequalpassionIhavesoughthavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofhavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine...Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardthealwayspitybroughtmebacktoofcriesofpainreverberateinmyinfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeople—ahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldlongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoohasbeenmyhavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedme.

Passage4.ALittleGirl

Sittingonagrassygrave,beneathoneofthewindowsofthechurch,wasalittleherheadbentbackshewasgazingupattheskyandsinging,whileoneofherlittlehandswaspointingtoatinycloudthathoveredlikeagoldenfeatherabovehersun,whichhadsuddenlybecomeverybright,shiningonherglossyhair,gaveitametallicluster,anditwasdifficulttosaywhatwasthecolor,darkbronzeorcompletelyabsorbedwassheinwatchingthecloudtowhichherstrangesongorincantationseemedaddressed,thatshedidnotobservemewhenIroseandwenttowardsherhead,highupintheblue,alarkthatwassoaringtowardsthesamegauzycloudwassinging,asifinIslowlyapproachedthechild,Icouldseebyherforehead,whichinthesunshineseemedlikeaglobeofpearl,andespeciallybyhercomplexion,thatsheuncommonlyeyes,whichatonemomentseemedblue-gray,atanotherviolet,wereshadedbylongblacklashes,curvingbackwardinamostpeculiarway,andthesematchedinhuehereyebrows,andthetressesthatweretossedabouthertenderthroatwerequiveringinthethisIdidnottakeinatonce;

foratfirstIcouldseenothingbutthosequivering,glittering,changefuleyesturnedupintomytheotherfeatures,especiallythesensitivefull-lippedmouth,grewuponmeasIstoodsilentlyseemedtomeamoreperfectbeautythanhadevercometomeinmyloveliestdreamsofitwasnotherbeautysomuchasthelookshegavemethatfascinatedme,meltedme.

Passage5DeclarationofIndependence

WhenintheCourseofhumanevents,itbecomesnecessaryforonepeopletodissolvethepoliticalbands

whichhaveconnectedthemwithanother,andtoassumeamongthepowersoftheearth,theseparateandequalstationtowhichtheLawsofNatureandofNature'

sGodentitlethem,adecentrespecttotheopinionsofmankindrequiresthattheyshoulddeclarethecauseswhichimpelthemtotheholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertainunalienableRights,thatamongtheseareLife,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness.—Thattosecuretheserights,GovernmentsareinstitutedamongMen,derivingtheirjustpowersfromtheconsentofthegoverned,—ThatwheneveranyFormofGovernmentbecomesdestructiveoftheseends,itistheRightofthePeopletoalterortoabolishit,andtoinstitutenewGovernment,layingitsfoundationonsuchprinciplesandorganizingitspowersinsuchform,astothemshallseemmostlikelytoeffecttheirSafetyand,indeed,willdictatethatGovernmentslongestablishedshouldnotbechangedforlightandtransientcauses;

andaccordinglyallexperiencehasshown,thatmankindaremoredisposedtosuffer,whileevilsaresufferable,thantorightthemselvesbyabolishingtheformstowhichtheyarewhenalongtrainofabusesandusurpations,pursuinginvariablythesameObjectevincesadesigntoreducethemunderabsoluteDespotism,itistheirright,itistheirduty,tothrowoffsuchGovernment,andtoprovidenewGuardsfortheirfuturesecurity.—SuchhasbeenthepatientsufferanceoftheseColonies;

andsuchisnowthenecessitywhichconstrainsthemtoaltertheirformerSystemsofhistoryofthepresentKingofGreatBritainisahistoryofrepeatedinjuriesandusurpations,allhavingindirectobjecttheestablishmentofanabsoluteTyrannyovertheseprovethis,letFactsbesubmittedtoacandidworld.

Thebestfriendamanhasintheworldmayturnagainsthimandbecomehissonordaughterthathehasrearedwithlovingcaremayprovewhoarenearestanddearesttous,thosewhomwetrustwithourhappinessandourgoodname,maybecometraitorstotheirmoneythatamanhashemayfliesawayfromhim,perhapswhenheneedsitman’sreputationmaybesacrificedinamomentofill-consideredpeoplewhoarepronetofallontheirkneestodoushonorwhensuccessiswithusmaybethefirsttothrowthestoneofmalicewhenfailuresettlesitsclouduponouroneabsolutelyunselfishfriendthatmancanhaveinthisselfishworld,theonethatneverdesertshim,theonethatneverprovesungratefulortreacherous,ishisman’sdogstandsbyhiminprosperityandinpoverty,inhealthandinwillsleeponthecoldground,wherethewintrywindsblowandthesnowdrivesfiercely,ifonlyhemaybenearhismaster’swillkissthehandthathasnofoodtooffer;

hewilllickthewoundsandsoresthatcomefromencounterwiththeroughnessofthewillguardthesleepofhispaupermasterasifhewereaallotherfriendsdesert,herichestakewingsandreputationfallstopieces,heisasconstantinhisloveasthesuninitsjourneysthroughthefortunedrivesthemasterforth,anoutcastintheworld,friendlessandhomeless,thefaithfuldogasksnohigherprivilegethanthatofaccompanyinghim,toguardhimagainstdanger,tofightagainsthiswhenthelastsceneofallcomes,anddeathtakesthemasterinitsembrace,andhisbodyislaidawayinthecoldground,nomatterifallotherfriendspursuetheirway,therebythegravewillthenobledogbefound,hisheadbetweenhispaws
