2.FormattingtheTitle,AuthorsandAffiliations
Pleasefollowtheseinstructionsascarefullyaspossiblesoallarticleswithinaconferencehavethesamestyletothetitlepage.Thisparagraphfollowsasectiontitlesoitshouldnotbeindented.
2.1.FormattingtheTitle
Thetitleisset17pointTimesBold,flushleft,unjustified.Thefirstletterofthetitleshouldbecapitalizedwiththerestinlowercase.Itshouldnotbeindented.Leave28mmofspaceabovethetitleand10mmafterthetitle.
2.2.FormattingAuthorNames
Thelistofauthorsshouldbeindented25mmtomatchtheabstract.Thestyleforthenamesisinitialsthensurname,withacommaafterallbutthelasttwonames,whichareseparatedby‘and’.Initialsshouldnothavefullstops—forexampleAJSmithandnotA.J.Smith.Firstnamesinfullmaybeusedifdesired.Ifanauthorhasadditionalinformationtoappearasafootnote,suchasapermanentaddressortoindicatethattheyarethecorrespondingauthor,thefootnoteshouldbeenteredafterthesurname.
2.3.FormattingAuthorAffiliations
Pleaseensurethataffiliationsareasfullandcompleteaspossibleandincludethecountry.Theaddressesoftheauthors’affiliationsfollowthelistofauthorsandshouldalsobeindented25mmtomatchtheabstract.Iftheauthorsareatdifferentaddresses,numberedsuperscriptsshouldbeusedaftereachsurnametoreferenceanauthortohis/heraddress.ThenumberedsuperscriptsshouldnotbeinsertedusingWord’sfootnotecommandbecausethiswillplacethereferenceinthewrongplace—atthebottomofthepage(orendofthedocument)ratherthannexttotheaddress.Ensurethatanynumberedsuperscriptsusedtolinkauthornamesandaddressesstartat1andcontinueontothenumberofaffiliations.Donotaddanyfootnotesuntilalltheauthornamesarelinkedtotheaddresses.Forexample,toformat

5.Footnotes
Footnotesshouldbeavoidedwheneverpossible.Ifrequiredtheyshouldbeusedonlyforbriefnotesthatdonotfitconvenientlyintothetext.
6.Figures
Eachfigureshouldhaveabriefcaptiondescribingitand,ifnecessary,akeytointerpretthevariouslinesandsymbolsonthefigure.
6.1.SpaceConsiderations
Authorsshouldtrytomakeeconomicaluseofthespaceonthepage;
forexample:
∙avoidexcessivelylargewhitespacebordersaroundyourgraphics;
∙trytodesignillustrationsthatmakegooduseoftheavailablespace—avoidunnecessarilylargeamountsofwhitespacewithinthegraphic;
6.2.TextinFigures
Whereverpossibletrytoensurethatthesizeofthetextinyourfigures(apartfromsuperscripts/subscripts)isapproximatelythesamesizeasthemaintext(11points).
6.3.LineThickness
Ingeneral,trytoavoidextremelyfinelines(oftencalled‘hairline’thickness)becausesuchlinesoftendonotreproducewellwhenprintedout—yourdiagramsmaylosevitalinformationwhendownloadedandprintedbyotherresearchers.Trytoensurethatlinesarenothinnerthan0.25pt.Notethatsomeillustrationsmayreducelinethicknesswhenthegraphicisimportedandreducedinsize(scaleddown)insideMicrosoftWord.
6.4.ColourIllustrations
YouarefreetousecolourillustrationsfortheonlineversionofJournalofPhysics:
ConferenceSeriesbutanyprintversionwillonlybeprintedinblackandwhiteunlessspecialarrangementshavebeenmadewithyourconferenceorganizerforcolourprinting.Pleasecheckwiththeconferenceorganizerwhetherornotthisisthecase.Ifanyprintversionwillbeblackandwhiteonly,youshouldcheckyourfigurecaptionscarefullyandremoveanyreferencetocolourintheillustrationandtext.Inaddition,somecolourfigureswilldegradeorsufferlossofinformationwhenconvertedtoblackandwhiteandthisshouldbetakenintoaccountwhenpreparingthem.
6.5.PositioningFigures
Individualfiguresshouldnormallybecentredbutplacetwofiguresside-by-sideiftheywillfitcomfortablylikethisasitsavesspace.Placethefigureascloseaspossibleafterthepointwhereitisfirstreferencedinthetext.Iftherearealargenumberoffiguresitmightbenecessarytoplacesomebeforetheirtextcitation.Figuresshouldneverappearwithinorafterthereferencelist.
6.6.FigureCaptions/NUMBERING
Captionsshouldbebelowthefigureandseparatedfromitbyadistanceof6points—althoughtosavespaceitisacceptabletoputthecaptionnexttothefigure.Figuresshouldbenumberedsequentiallythroughthetext—‘Figure1’,‘Figure2’andsoforthandshouldbereferencedinthetextas‘figure1’,‘figure2’,…andnot‘fig.1’,‘fig.2’,….
Forcaptionsnotplacedatthesideofthefigure,captionsshouldbesettothewidthofthefigureforwiderfigures,centredacrossthewidthofthefigure,or,fornarrowfigureswithwidecaptions,slightlyextendedbeyondthewidthofthefigure.Thecaptionshouldfinishwithafullstop(period).
6.6.1.Examples.Thefollowingexamplesshowhowtoformatanumberofdifferentfigure/captioncombinations.Notethatthetablebordersareshownasbrokenlinesforguidanceonly.
