ManypeoplehavewatchedadisputeovertheplacementofastonemarkerintheAmericanstateofAlabama.ThemarkerrepresentstheTenCommandments--rulesforlivingthatsomereligionssaycamedirectlyfromGod.

OnWednesday,workersremovedtheTenCommandmentsmonumentfromthecenterofagovernmentbuildinginAlabama.Theworkersactedonacourtorderfromafederaljudge.ThejudgehadruledthatleavingthemonumentinapublicplaceviolatedtheUnitedStatesConstitution.AP

TheChiefJusticeofAlabama’sSupremeCourt,RoyMoore,putthestonemarkerinthestatecourthousetwoyearsago.MisterMooreisaChristian.HewasknownforhissupportoftheTenCommandmentswhenthestate’svoterselectedhimchiefjusticeintwo-thousand.TheTenCommandmentsarealistofrulesforliving.Christians,Jews,andMuslimshonorthesedirectivesasthewordofGod.

LawyersrepresentingseveralgroupstooklegalactiontohavetheTenCommandmentsmonumentremovedfromtheAlabamacourthouse.Theyarguedthatputtingittherewasunconstitutional.

Lastyear,FederalDistrictJudgeMyronThompsonruledthatthemonument’splacementviolatedtheFirstAmendmentoftheConstitution.TheFirstAmendmentguaranteesthatreligionandgovernmentwillbeseparateinAmerica.JudgeThompsonorderedthemonumentremovedbyAugustTwentieth.Hesaidthatitcouldbeputinaprivateareainthecourthouse.

ChiefJusticeMooreappealedthejudge’sruling.HearguedthatAmerica’slegalsystemisbasedontheTenCommandments.HealsosaidhehastheconstitutionalrighttorecognizeGod.ButafederalappealscourtandtheUnitedStatesSupremeCourtbothrejectedhisappeals.

Still,ChiefJusticeMooredecidedtoleavethemonumentwhereitwas.ButAlabama’sassociateSupremeCourtjustices,thegovernorandthestate’slawyerdisagreed.Theeightjudgesvotedlastweektomovethetwoandone-halftonmarker.

Alabama’sJudicialInquiryCommissionthensuspendedChiefJusticeMooreonchargesofviolatingcourtrules.TheCourtoftheJudiciarycoulddecidetopunishorevenremovehimfromthehighcourt.MisterMoorehasthirtydaystoanswerthechargesagainsthim.

Supportersofthemonument’sremovalsayitisagreatvictoryfortheruleoflawandthehonorofreligiouschoice.ButRoyMooreandhissupportershavesaidtheywillcontinuetheirfighttoreturnittothecenterofthecourthouse.
