dependsentirelyonhishorsestotravel.Asaresult,heandhisthreesonsspendmuchoftheirtimefindingandcatchingthewildhorsesthatrunfreeinthecountryside.Thehorsesmustthenbe“broken”sothatthey’llallowpeopletoridethem.

Thegauchoexplainsthatthehorsemustadjusttousingasaddleandreinssotheridersaren’tthrownofflater.Thetreatmentseemscruel,butaccordingtoDonJosé
it’sactuallynot.Thetraining,hesays,oftenseemsharsherthanitis.
“Weloveourhorses,andintheend,theyloveusinreturn.ThisisthetraditionalwayoftrainingahorseinArgentina—thegauchoway.”
Beingagaucho,though,ismorethanalifeofsolitudeandcaringforhorsesandcattle.Thegauchowayoflifehasitsownstrictcodeofethics.Hospitalityandrespectforothersareasmuchapartofthislifestyleastheartofbreakinghorses.Argentinaisnearlythelastplacewherethiscodeofethicsandthedemandinglifestyleofthegauchostillexist.Thecountryishometonearly150,000gauchoswhoareverymuchapartofthenationalidentity.Therearegauchosinallpartsofthecountry,even2,000kilometerssouthofBuenosAires,ontheedgeofAntarcticainPatagonia.
Theharshterrainofthisregionhasitsowntypeofgauchoaswell.Here,thegauchosraisesheep,notcattle,andevenmoresurprisingly,manyspeakEnglish.ManyoftheancestorsofPatagoniangauchoswereimmigrantsfromScotland.Severalofthesesettlerscametotheareaduringthe19thcentury,includingtheancestorsofEduardoHallidayandhisfather,Jimmy.ThesetwogauchosrunaranchinPatagonia,andforthem,thisstrangeterrainseemsliketheperfectplacetolive.
TheHallidaysenjoylivingintheregionforanumberofreasons.ForJimmy,themostrefreshingaspectaboutlivinginPatagoniaisthatthere’sspaceeverywheresohecanseefarinalldirections.Thelandisalsorich,hesays,andproduceseverythingthatheandhisfamilyneed.LifeontheplainsofPatagoniaisdifficult,evenharsh,butthegauchosherehavelearnedhowtoadjustandsucceed.
Eduardohaslivedhisentirelifeonthefamilyranchandhaslearnedthetraditionalwaysfromhisfather.Thegoalofeverygauchoisself-reliance,andthesegauchosofPatagoniaarenodifferent.Becausetheranchissoremote,fatherandsonhavetoutilizeeverythingtheyhaveavailable.Thisalsomeanstheydon’tabandonanythingquicklyandoftenuseandreuseeverythingtheyhave,includingtheirbagsandtheirboots.Afterall,it’salongwaytogotobuynewones.
Gauchosareexpertsatadjustingtotheirsurroundings.Here,they’velearnedtousealocalweaponcalleda“boleadora”.Madeofleatherandsmallstones,boleadorasarestillusedtohuntrhea.Pursuingthesmallflightlessbirdsisnoproblem,buthittingthemcanbetough.Asthegauchosflylikethewindalongtheplainsontheirstronghorses,therheasrunswiftlyaheadofthem.It’sanexcitingchase,buttherheasgetaway—thistime.
Twenty-ninehundredkilometersnorthofPatagoniaistheregionofSalta.Herethestonyhillsandroughterrainhaveproducedyetadifferentkindofgaucho.ThegauchosherewereoncefiercesoldiersforArgentina,andtheywonrecognitionandrespectintheArgentinewarofindependencefromSpain.They’refamousfortheirhugeleatherchapsandredponchos,andoftencelebratetheirproudtraditionsinanannualparade.
OneofthebesthorsemenintheareaisRudecindoCampos.Rudecindolovesbeingagauchoandsaysthatit’sthelifehe’salwayswanted.

However,choosingthelifeofagauchomeansmorethanjustworkingwithhorses.JustasitisinCorrientes,astrictcodeofethicsandprinciplesisessentialtothegaucholifestyleinSaltaaswell.

“It’snotonlyknowinghowtocatchananimalwitharope,useasaddleorrideahorse.It’salsoaboutbeinggoodandkind.Whenyouaskagauchoafavor,hemustnotrefuse.Hedoesit.”
Attimes,it’sdifficulttomakeenoughmoneyworkingasagaucho.Inordertosurvive,Rudecindomustworkatapart-timejobsohecancontinuetraininghorses.Hespecializesintrainingastronglittlehorsefromtheareacalledacriollo.It’soneofthefewanimalsthatcanroundupcattleinthisroughterraincoveredwiththorns.Toprotectthemselvesfromtheenvironment,horseandriderrelyontheirspecialleatherchaps.Thethickleatherprotectsthepairfrominjuriesastheyroundupthelastofthecattle.
InSalta,eachtimethegauchossuccessfullyreturnthecattlesafelybacktotheranch,there’salivelyfiesta,acelebrationinwhichwomenhavealwayshadanimportantrole.Rudecindo’swife,whocomesfromthecity,talksaboutlifeontheranch.

Rudecindo:
“IfIgointotownfortwoweeks,Ican’twaittogethometothehorses,tothesmellofthecountryside,andthewetearthafterarain.Ilovethislife.”
Intheend,thestoryoftoday’sgauchomaybeoneofadaptation:
toclimate,tolandscape,andtotraditionalwaysoflifethatsustainthem.
