WhenBabbagewasworkingatCambridge,anewideaoccurredtohim.Hewantedtoconstructacalculating(计算)machinetoworkoutthesolutionstomathsproblemsnotonlywithcorrectnessbutalsowithaspeedbeyondthepowerofanyhumanmind.Hismachinecouldsolveproblemsinvolvinglongrowsoffiguresinonecontinuousoperation(运算).

BabbagecontinuedhisworkinLondonforfouryears.Thenhishealthbrokedown,andhehadtotakealongholidayabroad.WhenhereturnedtoLondonin1828,hewasattheendofhisresources.Manybillsremainedunpaid.Hischiefassistantandco-workersquarreledwithhimandleftwithmanyexpensivetools.Foroneyearnoworkwasdone.Duringthisperiod,Babbage,whosemindwasalwaysactive,suddenlythoughtofacompletelynewideaforthemachine.Herushedtomeetthegovernmentofficialstoexplainhisnewidea.Butthistime,theywereunwillingtohelphim.Foreightyears,theyrefusedtosaywhethertheywantedthemachineornot,andtheirfinalanswerwas“No”.

From1828to1839,BabbageheldthepositionofprofessoratCambridgeverysuccessfully.Buthisgreatestworkwastheunfinishedcalculatingmachinewhichstoodcoveredindustinhishouse.Itwasthebeginningofthemoderncomputer.
