Inthecourseofhistory,Londonhaswitnessedmanycasesofextremeflooding.Theworsteventtookplacein1953,when300peoplediedduringaheavystormthatspreadacrosstheNorthSeaandfloodedthecity.Afterthisdisaster,cityplannersdecidedthatsomethinghadtobedonetoprotectthecity.

Today,10rotating（旋转）steelBatesspanthe520metrewideThamesRiver.Undernormalconditions,thefivestoreyhighgatesaredownandshipscanpassthrough.Whendangerapproaches,the3000-tongatescanberaisedwithinminutestokeepextrawateroutofcityarea.Sincetheopeningofthebarrierin1982,thegateshavebeenclosedover170times.Recently,however,thegateshavebeenclosedveryoftenduetorisingsealevels.
